As per title I'm curious to know if anyone has hooked up their new MBP with the LG Ultra fine 5k monitor?
Is it working ok no issues?

Cheers

Just tried plugging my new 16.2" into my LG 5k, and it seems to be working great. Speakers and camera on the LG 5k both work.

Just added another cheap Asus monitor in another TB4 port and it works fine too. I'm also going through my CalDigit TS3+ and all of the accessories are working.

So far so good!

Cool thanks. Just watching a video review and the guy talks about it not recognising sometimes. Bit of a worry.

Because this Thread seems to be more appropriate than the other one I'll post my question here as well:

Hello everybody!
I got an all new MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro Base Model and my LG Ultrafine 5k charges it normally but it isn't detected as a Display or shows any kind of image. My old 15,4" 2018 Intel MacBook Pro runs the monitor without any problems. Both Monterey 12.0.1 and same cable connection (I tried both the original and a replacement cable, which worked fine with my 2018 MacBook Pro). The 5k is updated to its latest firmware (according to lg Screen Manager tested with my 2018).

Contacted Apple support with trying following steps:
- New Admin account -> nothing changed
- New Monterey Installation -> nothing changed
- Deleted the com.apple.windowserver....plist files in both Libraries with a reboot -> nothing changed

I am using a Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps 8k@30Hz/5k@60Hz replacement cable as well as the original one delivered by LG, but it still doesn't work.

Apple support told me to get in contact with LG which I did and they told me its a problem which has to be solved by apple. Now my Macbook Data is checked by Apple Technic Support within the next 7 days. (Update 14 days later: still no information.)

It doesn't appear in the system information, it says "no device connected" at any of the three TB4 Ports. Speed is 40 gbps x1 but Link width is 0x1 at all three ports.
As well there is no information at any of the connection Tabs, only in Power supply the battery gets charged but no further device detection anywhere.

Does anyone have the same issues and knows an answer to the problem apple does not know? Do I have to wait for a software update, is it a Monterey or M1 Pro problem? Any help is gladly appreciated! :)

I ended up buying the LG 5k Ultra and wow its great!!
I'm just needing to know if its safe to have my macbook pro connected to it over night / still docked?

Meaning does it effect it like over charge or anything?

Thanks.

Thanks man im loving it.. Just hoping it safe to keep it docked over night and not create any battery damage to the Macbook pro.

It works extremely well. I haven't experienced any problems waking from sleep like I did with my M1 Air.

Something is obviously not right. Did you try different ports on the MBP? I have same setup and it works fine…

i have a MBP 14 hooked up to ultrafine 5k through TB3 cable, and it works great. I have a lot of stuff plugged into the monitor’s usb-c ports - anker usb-3 hub, brio webcam, yeti microphone, sometimes a blu ray drive, and keyboard + trackpad, and the computer can see all of these as well as the LG’s webcam, speakers, and mic without issues.

Thanks for your reply. I tried every port, different cables and it works just fine with my old MBP 2018 15,4 inch. Apple support still doesn't know an answer, I'm pretty frustrated right now. Can you tell me which exact cable you're using?

If you're using a long cable or a thin USB-C cable, it's prob not gonna work - not carrying enough data for the video.

Try a cable that is <1 meter long and that is marked / advertised to be thunderbolt 3 or 4 compatible. I've had good luck with this one:

Anker USB-C to USB-C Thunderbolt 3.0 Cable (2.3 ft)

Thunderbolt cables are a mess right now. Here is a snippet from a prior post of mine:

USB-C / Thunderbolt cable standards are a mess. If you get a TB3/4 cable that is 1 meter or less, you should be in good shape. It should do both TB 3/4, DisplayPort, and high speed USB. But, some >1 meter USB-C TB3/4 cables do not transmit high speed (USB 3.0) signals or DisplayPort.

For instance, this 2m Belkin cable does high speed TB3/4, but is limited to only slower USB (2.0) speeds and would NOT work for some monitors (because no DisplayPort):

As I mentioned in my first post, I use this replacement cable (https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B093F5V5RP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), which has basically the same specs as your mentioned cable. It is suitable to do the job, especially because it works just fine with my older MBP, but if I just switch MacBooks with the same configuration, cable and even position on my desk, the new one just doesn't turn on.

I don't know what to say. My one suggestion would be to buy a short TB3/4 cable from a larger manufacturer and see if that works. If you live near an Apple store, the safest bet is to buy the Apple branded one, here:

I think the Anker cable is also good. When I first got my LG, I was having some very strange cable issues...

Also, there are two different revisions of the LG Ultrafine 5k. This shouldn't matter in your case, but FYI, the newer one supports video through USB (so you can, e.g., drive it with an iPad Pro) as well as through Thunderbolt:

Thanks for your answer! Yes, maybe I will get the original apple TB cable, the next store isn’t too far away. In addition I can ask the staff there if they know an answer. This is all really strange to me, especially because even the apple technic support doesn’t have a clue and nothing happened for 3 weeks now (5 in total, if I add the first „normal“ apple support contacts).
I hope a new cable will bring the solution, I will tell for sure if it does!

I've got a puzzling issue with my new 2021 MacBook Pro with the 5K display.

I've been using the LG 5K display with no problems at all using my 2017 MacBook Pro for some time, and have just upgraded to the 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro. Unfortunately now I have some display issues!

Since the upgrade and on the new MacBook Pro, the monitor still functions... but I only get 4k resolution and not 5k resolution.

When going into system report and looking at the Thunderbolt Busses, the one which has the 5k monitor connected to it only shows 20gbps whilst all the other ports show 40gbps. However when I unplug the monitor, the port speed goes back up to 40gbps. If I try a different port, the same thing happens. I understand that 40gbps is required for the 5k resolution.

The monitor works fine in all other ways (can control brightness etc with the keyboard). The monitor also still works fine at 5k with my 2017 MacBook Pro - using the exact same cable etc.

My conclusion is that it's a software issue, but I'm currently fully updated on Monterey 12.1 (21C52). Am in conversation with Apple Support who are escalating it, but fingers crossed it will be fixed in an update.

Would be very interested to hear if anyone else has a similar issue!

No problems with my 16" Max with one 27" LG 5K and two 21.5" LG 4K's running at the same time.
Also no problems running three XDR's at the same time.
I'm seriously considering selling my Mac Pro now, but I love the stability of the Xeons and how much Ram overhead I have.
Single core is much better on the MaxBook, everything is snappier and web browsing is noticeably faster.

Just updating to say that I was an idiot and using a USB-C cable and not a Thunderbolt 3 cable and now the issue is totally resolved.

Turns out that Intel Macs do not make it clear that the Ultrafine 5k monitor is only running at 4k when connected with just a usb-c cable.

Also adding to the complexity is that I was under the impression that the 5k monitor I was using was an early model which only supported display over Thunderbolt, but turns out it's a newer one that supports USB-C and Thunderbolt, with USB-C being limited to just 4k. Happy that it's fixed anyways with just a cheap new cable :)
