emac = waste of money

17" emac 1.42ghz G4 superdrive = $999

Mac mini loaded = $699
Dell 20" flat panel = $375 with coupons
keyboard and mouse = $50
---------------------------------
Total $1125

So for $125 more you get a bigger screen (20" flat panel) a killer little computer and wireless yada yada yada. Go with a dell 17" for $195 with coupons and you are $50 cheaper.

The emac is dead. The screen sucks, its big, ugly no wireless or bluetooth and the resale will be dirt. Get a mini and a dell.

eMac has MUCH better graphics and bigger(2x)/faster HD. 2 RAM slots are worth mentioning.

But that's quite a big price difference and you still get a slow hard drive and a worse GPU. I don't think the eMac is dead. I'm glad we have the choice between the two. :)

Oops posted the same thing. You're faster! ;)

I have to agree with you mactruck, the only reason i bought an eMac was becuase they sell dirt cheap on ebay.......

They are good if you wanna pick up an second hand mac for cheap and perform some upgrades like i have done....
Basically what i am trying to say is i wouldnt buy one new,

eMacs are great machines, and for the price you sure are getting a lot of features. Here is an example:

My Dell Dimension 4700:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz w/HT
512MB DDR2 SDRAM

40GB Serial ATA HD
48x CD-RW
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator w/ 128MB Shared graphics memory
Dell 17" LCD E17FP
Windows XP Home Edition
Some really crappy software.

eMac 1.42GHz Combo
PowerPC G4 1.42GHz processor
256MB DDR RAM
80GB HD
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
ATI Radeon 9600 64MB graphics card
17" Flat CRT Monitor
Mac OS X 10.4.2 "Tiger"
iLife '05, Games, Quicken, World Book etc.

The Dell cost $885, so you can add a stick of 512MB RAM for about $50 for a total of 768MB and have more RAM. But all the extra software, better graphics, Combo Drive, Tiger, and larger HD all make the eMac a great deal.

In bold is the features that make that make that particular model stand out compared to other.

It really depends on the age though. A lot of times, a kid's first computer will be purchased by their parents when they are in 4th-7th grades. However, by the time you go into high school, if your intereted in computing, you may use you own money to buy a computer, or pay for part of a more expensive computer, like a PowerBook or a high end iMac. For me, my parents bought me a iMac when i was in 4th grade to start learning how to type. However, now I'm going to high school, I wanted a better computer and I'm paying for part of my iMac 20".

That sounds like a good logic toward getting a new computer. When my parents purchased my eMac back in October '04, I was really hell-bent on getting the 1.6GHz Combo G5 iMac. However my mom told me that it was too expensive and that spending over $1000 for a computer (She says with so many computers under $1000 being so good, why spend more). Had I thought about going in on half, I might have a iMac right now. O well, still love my eMac! :)

I'm 14 and I have a 1.5ghz 12" PowerBook.

At school I used eMacs a lot. For the money, I think they are pretty good computers. Mac Minis are only cheaper if you already have a monitor.

eMacs really are great computers. Many people don't like them becuase they aren't as "pretty" as other Macs or they have a CRT screen. But for what you get at the price, the eMac is the best Mac deal around (considering you don't already have a monitor you could hook a Mac Mini up to).
