Anyone update from Leopard 10.5?

I have a friend with 10.5 running on a 2008 unibody MacBook. Can I do an 'upgrade' using a Mavericks USB stick or can I only do a fresh install?
 
You can easily upgrade from 10.6 to 10.9, but Apple doesn't support upgrading from 10.5. You'll have to upgrade to 10.6 first, then run the 10.9 installer.
