I have a 2015 15" retina MBP. It was the last model without USB-C or the touchbar so it's held its value well.

But I'm considering upgrading to the 2018 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro. For the 32GB of RAM option and also for the extra 2 cores. I love my current Mac but I find it can choke if I have a bunch of browser tabs open, which I usually do. That 16GB goes fast. 32GB of RAM should be MORE than enough. Also if I am using a virtual machine, I can't allocate more than 2 cores and 4GB of RAM without it significantly affecting the performance of my Mac.

I use my MacBook Pro at least 5 hours a day so keeping things fast saves me time and headache.

Worth it?

I have a 2015 15". I run multiple Docker container, 10's of Safari tabs, Calendar, todo app, Station app and Ulysses. So far, the laptop has held up pretty well. Although I would like to allocate more than 2 cores to my VM, many times I have found it is unnecessary.

The 2018 seems to be have mixed results - there are people who are very happy with it and claim it is the best laptop they ever owned while there are also people who are suffering from cracked screens, keyboard failure and kernel panics.

I personally believe it is not worth the risk due to the faulty keyboard design. Although I do not own one, I am of the opinion that the condom keyboard is just a patch and does not address the root cause why keyboards fail on these machines.

For my usage, I believe the 2015 can run for another year or two (I bought one without the graphic card; hence I am hopeful). Hence, I would not recommend an upgrade.

I'm considering it, but will probably wait until the 2019 model - this will give time to confirm that the 2018 keyboard issues are indeed resolved. And maybe in the meantime, iOS or the new iPad Pro might suffice instead.

For now, my 2015 is doing what it needs to do.

2015 is good year. You got luck for hold that one. If 16GB for virtual machine is not enough for you. There must some mistake you've probably made.
For MBPT2018. People starting discuss at the drunk over night keyboarders, you know between the 2017...2016 model. Then all of sudden people find DDR4 32GB on the list. Idk
Now is darker out there. If you feel bored need new for fun. Right a head and do it.

I upgraded from a 2015 15" to a 2018 15"
I also run a Virtual Machine on my Mac, and it wasn't a super smooth experience on the 2015. For me it was more of a CPU bottleneck for which 6 cores definitely help.
For me it was worth it, 2018 is around 50% faster in tasks that I use it for over the 2015.

Lack of USB-A ports isn't that big of a problem for me either, I bought a $40 dongle from Amazon which basically gave me all the ports I had on my 2015. Keyboard takes around a day to get used to, and Touch Bar, although isn't something that I'd pay extra if it were optional on the 15", is a party trick and fun to use.

I had a 2014 15 MBP and I bought a 2015 and carry both with me. If I need more horsepower or screen space, I just fire up the second one.

I continue to love and use my 2015 15"..
I'm sure more speed would always be nice, but I don't feel inhibited at all.

At this point, I don't see myself getting another Mac until I see what's happening with this ARM stuff and what that future looks like, according to Apple.

I am also keeping my mind open to the possibility that I may not even be a Mac customer in the future at some point.
