I love ING. I've been saving with them for a little over 2 years now. They actually just sent me a certificate in the mail today that will save me $10 off my next fill up at Shell.

You can't beat that 5.3% though.

The majority of my money beats 5.3% annually ... not in a savings account but it can be beat easily with other relatively low risk investments. I don't think its worth it to jump from these online banks ... find one you like and just forfeit the .8% ... at one point it can't be worth your time.

$_$

I've got one, but I'm terrible with money. Terribly lazy in managing it. I'm good at saving or not spending it. I usually throw a grand in there once a year. Usually around tax time. To lazy to fix my direct deposite.

yea ive had ing for savings for a while now very satisfied

however, i jumped ship to hsbc with their special 3 month promotion of 6% on new deposits. in may ill re evaluate the interest rate battle and see where i wanna go and see how hsbc was.. but im optimistic

ing interface cant be beat though, plain simple and easy and efficient

ING is great, in my opinion, because of the ease of use. i've been saving with them for almost a year, and i will stay with them for as long as possible because:

- my rate has increased at least three times in less than a year
- their website is secure, easy to use, and very intuitive
- their transfer-out time (for me, based on my bank) is between 2-3 days
- once you're signed up, you can open new accounts and bounce money back and forth very easily
- the savings process itself is simplified...i have automatic savings (set up through ING's site) every other week, so i never have to think about my savings, i just know that for the next three months, $x will be transferred from checking to my ING account
- you can cancel your automatic savings at any time...which is helpful if you know you'll be short on checking funds. you can then restart it at any time when you are back on track :D
- their phone support, should you ever need to call, is wonderful...the people are polite, they speak english, and stop at nothing to help you
- the only e-mails they ever send to me is when the rate goes up

if you're planning on saving for the long term, want a good return, desire simplicity, and don't plan on raiding the account multiple times each month (which you shouldn't do anyway- it's savings!) then ING is at or near the top of the list.

hope that helps. ;)

just curious... what's so great about it? how does it work? are there real checks?

First off, 3.5%APY on your checking account balance along with a mastercard debit card with a $1,000 overdraft line of credit. There are paper check, you just don't have them. If you need to pay a bill or something you fill out a virtual check online and they will mail it to whomever. I'm really digging it so far, transferred all my money from my Wachovia checking to ING. :)

oh, as far as their electric checking deal.... i think no paper checks means bust. everything else is fantastic, but there are certain things in which you HAVE to write checks or pay cash for... so theyre kind of still necessary these days (although i wish they weren't)

sorry to resurrect this thread...

i got my invitation this morning for the "electric orange".

if anything, i give them kudos for the awesome product name. :D

GnarleyMarley87, how much of a pain in the butt is it to deposit money? i have direct deposit for my paycheck, so that's not an issue...but my husband doesn't, so every two weeks would we have to mail them his check?

anyone else using the electric orange? i'm very interested and i think i might open one this weekend...any additional input would be appreciated! :)

I just opened the orange checking account the other day and I love the fact I can get 3.5% interest on whatever I have in there. The paper check part doesn't bother me as I very rarely write them. I still have my B o fA account and I setup my orange checking account to receive monthly transfers from my B of A account. I will keep my B of A account to process checks I receive and just transfer the money to the orange account.

Has anyone looked at their Roth IRA? I am considering opening one of those also.

Just as an aside, you might take a look at Washington Mutual for banking as well. They are offering 5% interest on savings accounts if you open a checking account with them. There aren't any fees associated with this either from what I've read on their site.

i guess you're right...we can keep our current checking account and just transfer. my bank checking -> ING savings transfer time has been great so far. hopefully bank checking -> ING checking would be the same.

seriously, i'm thinking about it as well...for whatever reason i'm petrified that i won't have enough money after retirement! *sigh* i can see me ending up with all kinds of ING accounts! :p

oh, one totally silly question...is the debit card orange? ;)

Well, I didn't read through this whole thread, but I have a INGdirect.com account. Actually, I have multiple accounts under my customer number. I have never had a problem with them and my transfers have always gone through. They do limit you to 6 withdrawals a month, though. However, in about 3-5 years (not sure how long it's been since I signed up), I've only gone past the 6 one time.

I also just opened an emigrantdirect.com. This bank has a better savings rate than ING, but I don't want to move all my money to them. Therefore, I will use them in addition to ING.

well, that's kind of a letdown. :p i expected an orange card, or at least the bouncy ball. it would have been pretty.

thanks, Motley.

Well it does have an orange ball and an orange wavy stripe at the bottom, but it is mostly blue.
