Looking to offload an old iMac. Found a company who pay for DPD pickup as they are big and heavy, called “MacBack”, this is in UK.

Has anyone used them before? They are giving about £80 more than Apple where I could walk in and give it to an Apple store, so wondering if worth it.

Thanks

I have just had a look at the site and the feedback looks favourable.
I have been thinking of trading/selling in my late 2015 iMac and Apple gave me a quote of £300
I have been given a quote of £535 by Mackback which is a good deal more
Just need to find out a bit more info before taking the plunge

Check the small print.
Make sure they will give you what they quoted.
A lot of these companies receive your device, then revise the quote based on condition.

They do I agree but it’s an old iMac and I know works perfect and is in great condition, but you’re right they do this often.

I would take video and pics of it working and condition.

The trouble selling it elsewhere is P+P costs etc, as it’s big and heavy and these pay for P+P with DPD.

Not sure actually who pays for return if disagree, better check that!

*edit* they pay for return if disagree with price. Get good reviews on trustpilot to.

Yes i know where you are coming from.
I have had a read through and they will send the item back via DPD if your not happy with the quotation if they amend it from the original.
Also there are a lot of "Dodgy" Reviewers out there too lol. It's a shame there aren't any people on here who have used them to give some feedback.
The other route would be a private sale maybe.
I am surprised at the difference in the two quotes and i use DPD quite regularly too and they are a very good delivery service.
My M1 iMac is arriving mid November so i have some time to decide on what to do

What iMac are upgrading from/selling, and which M1 iMac did you get specs, upgrades etc out of interest.

I’m busy deciding, may get my old iMac out this week and check and try MacBack as it’s sitting doing nothing.

I have a late 2015 iMac 27" 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M395 2 GB
2 TB SSD HD
I have just purchased the higher spec M1 iMac with 16GB RAM 2TB HD

My iMac’s even older at 2012, haven’t used in years should have got rid ages ago, just started using iPad and iPhone but miss the iMac a bit.

Wow that’s a good spec! 2Tb SSD is a lot of £££. I’m debating on getting 16Gb RAM or not, 16Gb and 2Tb is top top spec and makes it very expensive.

I think I’ll just go for 256Gb SSD and use my iCloud for pics, and if have to get an external SSD in future.

I take it you are looking at keeping this a long time?

I’m just disappointed Apple didn’t put the M1 pro/Max in the iMac as the M1 is really for mobile computer, low power use whereas that doesn’t matter in an iMac.

Yes hopefully it will last a good while.
I would imagine Apple will bring out newer iMacs with M1 Pro/Max in the foreseeable future but the iMac have ordered will more than suit my needs as i am a light user regarding image processing etc.
I just need to decide what i'm going to do with the older one now. "Mackback" does seem to be a great offer (Maybe too good an offer to be true) and then if they do try to drop the quote there is the element will the machine come back as i sent it internally as you can see the outside but not inside if anything has changed.Down to trust i suppose.

I have sold a lot of Camera gear to MBP over the last few years and they have been brilliant and i had to trust them on the first deal but needn't have worried as I've never had a problem at all.

Yeh great spec that, I think the M1 is really good just a bit disappointed that they didn’t put M1 Pro in as more than capable. Wish I could get spec you’re getting! I think I might try go over budget and go for 16Gb RAM though, again can’t believe (although I can with Apple) that they are putting only 8Gb as standard, my 2012 had that as standard almost 10 years ago!!!

I only do light work on it so think will be more than do, wanting Apple silicon now as think all MacOS, and features will be for M series.

I think I’m going to try MacBack, I’m going to photo/video the outside as they are always fussy. I have original box and outer packing so should be safe and DPD insure it.

If they don’t give amount I’ll get to return, Apple giving £120 trade in which I may as well take. Not sure you can use trade in after the fact of buying but waiting for delivery though.

Not sure what MBP is sorry where you sold other stuff.

Thanks

MBP Photographic are a company based in Brighton they Buy/Trade in photographic gear as well as sell new gear too.
They use DPD for all of their collections/Deliveries. I have used them on several occasions to sell some gear to and they have given me the best quote i can find anywhere and very very quick in payment etc. A shame they don't take computer gear as well lol.
Let me know how you get on with your transaction if you go ahead with it.

I would recommend a larger ssd, 512gb (preferably 1tb), as the unified system can do a lot of disk swaps to speed things up. If your doing stuff that 'really' needs more than the 16gb ram it will read/write to disk a lot more (more free space the better).
256gb ssd will fill up quicker than you think.

I agree but the cost just gets ridiculous. To add 8Gb RAM is £200!?! I know this is Apple but….my 2012 iMac came with 8Gb, nearly 10 years later it’s still standard. 8Gb RAM isn’t/shouldn’t be £200 upgrade cost.

I’d love a larger SSD, but to go to 512Gb is another £200 so total £400 for some basic upgrades. You also never get the money back on upgrades.

My Photo library is over 1Tb now anyway so has to go on external.

I’ll be keeping this for years (hopefully) so I think have to go 16Gb RAM. I’m more worried a bit on M1 and wether to wait for an M1 Pro in it, I know you just end up waiting for the next thing all the time, but I’m a little disappointed that Apple didn’t as M1 is more for power efficiency.

Just an update regarding the Macback quote.
Out of curiosity i have just got another online quote and now they offer £378.25 for exactly the same machine which they quoted £535 such a difference in the space of a week.
Don't think i will bother with them now as i can see if i sent it to them god knows what they will come back with.

Maybe because the new MacBook Pro's where released, so reducing the value.
Just a thought.

My old iMac price has gone up!?! Must remember to dust it off and try and get it sent off. May as well try as Apple only giving £120 trade in, MacBack is double.

I wonder why they have dropped my quote so much then.If i were you i would get the duster out and get it sorted ASAP in case they change their mind lol.

Looks as though i have had a quote from different companies.
My other half was looking online and checking some quotes for me and she went to Macback and was quoted the £378 but i have realised it was a company named MacBuyBack that quoted the £535 last week so i have just checked again and the quote is the same £535 and they offer free collection etc.

Lol well if i go ahead it will be with Mac Buy Back and certainly not MacBack.
My new M1 doesn't get delivered until late November so will have to wait until then so it looks as though it might be you first lol.
You could always try Mac Buy Back and compare quotes with MacBack ?

Mac buy back doesn’t show 2012 iMac only from 2013 so I’ll have to use MacBack. They use DPD so decent postage service. Not sure if they’d use DPD on way back if disagree with valuation though. Must cost a fortune to send an iMac via DPD, so to send back to me in that case also would cost.

Still haven’t ordered an M1 iMac yet, still debating….

Shame they don't list the 2012.
They do say they will return free if you disagree with the quote if they adjust it but who knows and its down to trusting them i suppose. They more than likely have a deal with DPD & Parcelforce.

I kept on debating about a new iMac for a good while and finally bit the bullet and ordered it and looking forward to it arriving now.

Yeh can’t compare now, put in 2013 with similar specs and around same money as MacBuy.

Need to decide as delivery dates now into start of December. Not sure wether to wait for Black Friday now, but maybe too late then for before Xmas delivery.

Think I’ve decided to get 16Gb RAM though for future proofing. Did you get AppleCare+ with yours?

Thanks

Yes i did get the Apple care just as an insurance.
I purchased it for a previous Imac that i had and i had a problem with the built in card reader and i took it into the Apple store in Milton Keynes (Local for me as only 30 minutes away) and it turned out to be an issue but it was attached to the Logic board so they replaced the board which would have cost me a bit if I hadn’t got the Apple care so after that i have always purchased it on my iPhones and iPads and iMacs.

You will benefit from the 16GB RAM in the future and to my mind can only benefit the Imac from the start and it could be an expensive regret as you wont be able to upgrade in the future.

I think Apple give a bit of discount on Black Friday via gift vouchers for the store.
