I’m looking to get my third HomePod to be placed in the kitchen and have a choice of 2 places to put it.

The other half wants it to be placed on top of a shelf unit...which is 6 foot high....nothing will be around it on the shelf and will be about 15 inches from the wall, but will also be about 20 inches below the ceiling....which is where my concern about the sound.

So was just curious to see how many folks have them positioned in a high place?

Seems like putting any speaker that high would result in lack of bass. Though I haven’t tried it with HomePod - maybe it’s magical directional algorithms can mitigate the problem somewhat.

Do an experiment: Move one of your existing ones to the location and see how it performs. Leave it for a few days to get a good feel for it.

I did that when I was contemplating putting one on top of a wall-mounted cabinet. The sound was okay, but I didn’t like the controls being out of reach. Voice control is great, but sometimes you just want to hit volume - a few times.

As long as you can still access the top display... Like Arran said, sometimes it’s more efficient to tap the buttons for volume or pause, especially when Siri is ignoring you. That display also gives a visual cue as to the status of the HomePod.
Do you have any wall space? Amazon has wall mounts and you can mount at any height you’d like. I have one placed on the kitchen counter about an inch away from a 90 deg wall corner (inner angle) and a few inches below the cabinet and I think it sounds great. Just went with the whole directional algorithm thing Apple touted. I’m no audiophile by any means but curious as to what your second choice is.

I have mine set up at about six feet and it works great. I turned on the tone so it lets you know it heard you since you can’t see the light on top.

I just got another one from BB since they finally went back on sale. I planned to put it at about 6 feet... but now I'm rethinking that....

Just thought would give an update on this.
I got another HomePod and placed it higher up than typical placement, about 6 foot high, on top of a set of wooden shelves in the kitchen.
I am happy with how this looks and sounds for my kitchen, as the 1st choice position for me was on the end of the kitchen table which would have been better for sound quality but that would be more risk of being in harms way of kids or cats knocking it off, or spilling something on the table and making contact with the HomePod.
Also in my house, the kitchen is always very busy in terms of noisy white goods always being on....tumble dryer or the washing machine or the dishwasher etc....this is purely to enjoy background music while doing stuff in the kitchen.
If it was a quiet room and my main listening room then I wouldn’t put it so high, but it works perfectly for me and my household.
