Are you using your IPP with with just the ASK or SC, at home? By that I mean no back, no skin, no case or no sleeve? If so, how do you place it down?

use both ASK and SC. I don't have a back for it and i take it to work as well but never used a back cover. I have just bought a sleeve to put in my bag. When I go bed i normally just leaving it standing up on the smart cover. never leave it flat.

Why both SC and ASK?

Not clear about what you mean by "standing on the SC".

I have the UAG case to protect the back, and the ASK for typing. The IPP 12.9 lives on our counter in the kitchen for what ever we may need it for. If someone wants to take it to the couch or table, they can keep it (ASK) on or take it off. The UAG cover and ASK work together to wrap the IPP and protect it for transport.

I have two young children (rambunctious boys to be specific), so none of my gear ever gets left out or set anywhere without a case on it. I always have a back cover and a Smart Cover or Smart Keyboard on my iPad at all times. As well as a tempered glass screen protector.

I am planning on using the Smart Keyboard when it's needed, and the Smart Cover when not.

Also, the IPP 10.5 will be in that triangle stand:

The reason for buying both the ASK and SC was because some users reported the weight of the ASK would be inconvenient for the IPP 10.5 (compared with the SC) and I had my suspicions the ASK would not be pleasant to hold it, specially in that triangle stand.

Also I noticed there were no SC alternatives out there (only the front cover, since I already have a Moko rear case) and one front cover I found had poor reviews. So to prevent any future problems I ordered the SC from Apple.

I did the same thing with the 12.9. I was undecided about which to use (SC or ASK) for many weeks. I returned stuff and then repurchased again. I was looking for the perfect solution. I realized that each fulfilled a need. I decided, finally to have both.

Is it safe (advisable) to not use the ASK or SC, if you are just using the IPP 12.9 while in bed? Anyone do that?

I used to have the SC on my 12.9, but it's chipped up a bit so I've stopped using it for a few months now, I'll either set it down on the back or on the ASK - don't worry about it too much and it's in great shape... it doesn't get tossed around like the phone does, so it doesn't get the wear and tear in the same way - that said, it did fall off the couch once and hit an edge and crack (since been replaced)... but I don't think the SC would've helped that

Just have SC.

Place the iPad faceup on the SC so back is showing. Or i place it facedown with SC showing when I place it on my laptop sleeve.

My back cover really helped in an accidental snag on the power cord the other day. My back case absorbed all the impact on the corner and iPad came back unscathed. Lick of the finger and wipe of the case and it was like it never happened. If the back cover were not on, there would have been no protection from a direct corner hit impact with the tile floor.

I am... Very weary about it but with a 12.9 and ASK I like the fact that its not so heavy when I actually use it as a tablet on the couch or in bed.

I’m contemplating buying one of those Apple Leather cases but the $100 plus price point makes me hesitant.

You mention the "Apple Leather Case". It is a sleeve and not a case. As far as the price, it is, in my opinion, fairly priced. The Leather quality is superb. If you look at quality manufacturers, such as Pad and Quill or SFbags, their choices are similarly priced.

I had the Apple Leather Sleeve and returned it. Not because of the quality, but, since I was not taking my IPP out of the house, I felt the utility of the sleeve would be limited. On the infrequent occasions that I take my iPad outside, I have a great shoulder bag that was specifically designed for the iPad. It has a special built in sleeve.

Moreover, I felt that while the Leather Sleeve works with the ASK, the fit it tight and you really have to work to get it in and out. I am sure the Leather would stretch over time, but after 10 days, it was still a tight fit. It works much better with the Leather Smart Cover, I might add.

Again, the sleeve has a lot going for it, depending on your use pattern, but it does not offer the protection of a case.

You are worrying too much. It’s not a delicate device. I use the Smart Cover mostly for propping it up but otherwise no protection. If I carry it around then it’s going to be in a bag anyway. If you want to avoid scratches on the back then a skin might be a good idea to avoid adding extra weight.

You made me laugh. I currently have three keyboard cases. Two Apple Smart Keyboards (I bought at the Apple Store, and found an open box one at Best Buy). I also have a Logitech Create. I like different features of both. The Apple Store ASK is going back tomorrow. I need to make a decision and stick with it. I have actually toyed with keeping both. My husband will think I have lost my mind.

Ive only ever used the Smart Cover on mine, at night when charging its in a 12 south iPad arc which they no longer make. if I set it on the table or such I usually place cover down.
