Hi

I am considering moving from Verizon 10GB to their GoUnlimited plan.

Have you found that you were throttled? Has this happened often?

Has streaming been good? Verizon says that the mobile hotspot is throttled after 15GB. We have never yet used any hotspot. Should this be of concern?

Currently we have an Apple Music family plan, would we need to continue that?

We have two iPhones (X abd XS) and two cellar iPads (11 Pro) . The next level beyond Go, is a much better plan but it is $88 more per month and simply not worth it.

What has been your experience with GoUnlimited!

Thanks.

Jay

I just switched to the GoUnlimited from a 8GB plan 2 weeks ago. I’m not worried about any throttling, but I was concerned about “network congestion during peak hours” slowing us down but we haven’t had any issues at all. None and believe me, we put it to the test. We have 3 phones on my plan and none of us have had any complaints so far. My son can game or stream in the car now without me yelling to watch the data. Lol. I’m happy I switched, and the rep I spoke to said he’d guarantee a return to my 8GB plan for 30 days if I wasn’t happy the unlimited.

Can’t speak for your Apple Music plan. Not sure why you’d want to cancel it especially with the GoUnlimited, stream away and you won’t need to watch your data.

For me it’s been great, glad I made the switch. I’d say give it a shot.

We are in nyc. Should that matter?

We switched to Verizon GoUnlimited in December from Sprint. Service has been great in terms of reception (especially compared to Sprint). When in congested areas, I had download speeds of around .7-1mbps. It’s usable but it’s not typical LTE speed. Once you move towers or the tower becomes uncongested, speeds go back to normal automatically.

If there’s no network congestion, I’ve seen speeds of 80-100mbps on my iPhone XS Max.

I don’t know, it all depends. In my area of north Jersey we have areas known for weak cell service to begin with. So I was really skeptical about switching but for me it’s been great. See what they say about switching back to your current plan if need be. Maybe you can try it out a week or two and go back if you have any problems. The fact I had 30 days to go back was the deciding factor for me to make the switch.

I've been using Verizon unlimited plans as my only internet connection. I've used both Beyond and Above, the two next higher plans after Go.

My experience is that, after I hit the limit that ends LTE hotspot speeds, I get reduced immediately to ~80 KB down. It does not matter if it's 3 PM or 3 AM, that is the throttled speed. Interestingly, I get ~120 KB upload while throttled.

I'm in a rural area, so I don't know if that makes a difference. But before the throttling begins, I get several MB down, and about 1 MB up.

Note, I'm referring to speeds as calculated by macOS Network monitor, not the speed test sites, which always exaggerate speed.

Sorry if I am rude, but I am asking about the GoUnlimited plan. If you have any experience with that please share it. Otherwise talking about the other unlimited plans is not helpful to me.

Yes, you asked about Go, and I told you my experience with the two higher plans. I doubt Go would be any better. Do you?

You are misunderstanding my original post. I have no allusion that Go is better than the other VZ unlimited plans. Quite the contrary. As I am switching from a 10GB data plan, I am concerned about how frequently I might experience de-prioritizing slowdowns due to network congestion. Also, while I don’t stream now, I was wondering about the adequacy of the streaming speed. While I have never used a hotspot, we would only get 15GB of LTE and I wondered about that.

Again my concerns regard what I might experience when switching from a traditional data plan.

I think it comes down to trying it out. I say that because there seems to be anecdotal evidence that not all subscribers are treated the same with regard to throttling/prioritizing.

I personally think that it has to do with the tower you are connected to, and perhaps rules specific to it based on it's traffic patterns. I personally see very slow speeds while throttled, far below what Verizon claims on their website (600 Kbps), and countless times I've learned of others that get faster speeds while throttled than I do at full speed.

Yes, I realize my rural tower is probably not as fast as many in urban areas, but it is capable of far exceeding what the speed I actually achieve via my iPhone hotspot. I have tested it with various plans, and multiple devices including a Verizon Jetpack.

So, it probably really does come down to trying it in your own area, on your primary tower(s).

I'm on VZW and have the above unlimited plan, but I had to check the plans to see why you were asking the way you were. The two other plans throttle(deprioritize) after the data allowance is used up. The go unlimited plan is subject to immediate throttling, based on tower congestion.

I agree though with what @nouveau_redneck stated, in that you probably should try out the plan and see if you like it. Everybody's experience is likely to be different depending on the time of day and the location.

Check into the February unlimited plan. From my understanding you start with Go Unlimited and then use the chat support to switch you to the February unlimited (fUDP). Apparently the costs are better if you have 4 or more lines. Since you have two phones and two iPads I’m not sure if it would be a better deal for you or not.

I checked with chat and I have a 55+ price adjustment on my plan and a loyalty discount that would make it cheaper. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for bringing my attention to this - looks like I can get the benefits of Beyond Unlimited for the price I'm currently paying for Go Unlimited. Appreciate the tip. =)

OP: My GoUnlimited experience has been good. I feel that I'm experiencing throttling once in a while, but I put my phone back in my pocket and once I pull it out a few minutes later, it seems to be gone. I've never experienced a whole day where I thought I was being throttled.

Check. The plan may no longer be available via the Chat.
