Judging by this thread i guess I'm one of the few that just turns on his phone and uses it.

If problems arise, they'll come from my normal usage.

Micro scratches? Give me a damn break people.

I guess you use it.

but then if the battery doesn't last as long as you expect, is that a hardware issue or software? 9 time out of 10, its software imo.

There's also perceived battery life. We'll all be using our new phones a lot more than usual for a couple of days, and a lot of people drain their batteries faster than they're accustomed to.

My steps are turn on device
1. Check for scratches and dust under screen and back camera.
2. Download dead spotter from Apple App Store check for dead/stuck pixels 100% brightness.
3. Check mic, earphone jack, front face camera, back camera, Bluetooth, volume up and down switch after all that working
4. Use the device normal to test battery.

Fingers cross hope my is defect free last year had to exchange three times due to dead pixels and dust.

This is my procedure exactly! But next I:

5. Put it back in the box
6. Wrap the box in a sealed vacuum bag and suck all the air out.
7. I replace the air with xenon gas.
8. Encase the entire bag in tree sap and wait for it to harden
9. Put it in a wooden crate filled with cement.
10. Bury the box 15 feet deep surrounded by granite slabs.

And there you have it! Easy-peasy! My iPhone stays blemish free after that!

In my opinion that is a little bit too much OCD and you are very anal. There is no need to look for micro scratches or tiny blemishes in the phone. if you do find some later and you can always get it exchanged at a different time. People are going to be in line waiting for their phone and they don't need people like you to slow them down from getting their phone because you found a micro scratch. Besides you should be putting a case on it anyway and any scratches that you may or may not see will be hidden by the case and if you choose not to use the case, then that's your problem because you're going to be putting your own scratches on it. Then what will you do?

We just welcomed a newborn into our family 3 weeks ago and it sounds like some of you do a better job of checking your new phones for "defects" than I did with my son. Lol. Relax. It's a phone and it comes with an exchange period and a warranty.

Well when you pay $1000 for a phone, it just needs to be perfect.
Bought a new car last year, it had some lite rust on the underbelly. Nothing will ever be perfect.

Did I take it back? No, because you'll find some minor defects on every new vehicle.

Just my prediction. Over the next few days, there will be a slew of people complaining about:
  • Screen yellow tint
  • Screen blue tint
  • Dust under screen
  • light bleed
  • scratches
  • micro dings
  • Some unspecified "Gate"
In the end it will amount to the same few OCDers who will return 6 phones before finally giving up.

Haven't had a single problem with my 6 Plus, i have only ever had to replace a new 5S because of a battery, otherwise i've been pretty lucky... should be fine with the SPlus

iPhone 5 was the worst Quality control I still remembering opening around six brand new retail boxes at my local Apple Store each one was badly scuffed up.

Took mine out of the box and it was COVERED in adhesive residue. Scrubbed it all night to get the crap off. Was not impressed at all.

First thing first I'll check for screen uniform color then dead pixels. Then examine overall to see if there's any scratch. My experience tells me the iPhone tends to have micro scratches around the curved edges area.
I'll start with looking for scratches on the nylon wrap. If I'll find any, I'll not bother even to open the box. Straight back to apple with the same Fedex guy that will bring it!

I'm going to try bending it in half first. Then I'll give it to a much stronger person to try bending it. Then I'm going to run it over.

But seriously this is a major purchase. I treat it like a new tv. I think everyone should for anything that costs this much.

I will definitely will be checking for any screen defects. I will not tolerate yellow tinted screens.

Last year, I had to get my 6 replaced 4 times cause of dead pixels with each replacement/screen replacement. At the 3rd time the manager got really mad and literally started yelling at me that my "expectations of Apple are too high". I even mentioned that they were not as my friends have "perfect" iPhones. He said he'd do a final replacement and what do you know, it was fine with no pixel issues. I wish I had recorded him, but I definitely called Corporate on that one and they did "solve the issue".

well so far we've had:
antennagate
scratchgate
bend-ghazi

Cant wait to see what sort of ridiculous non-issue people invent this year
