I'm looking at a 2017 VW and I can't figure out if I can use my Touch for music through the touch screen via the USB. My current VW has the older MDI connector in the glove compartment and after connecting my Touch, I can both scroll through my music (play list etc.) and select what I want to play on the car's touch screen.

VW has now car-net which is their version of CarPlay. Apple said that they do not support CarPlay on the Touch but I found a couple places on the net that claims the Touch could be compatible with car-net. I also found a couple of places that claimed car-net is not compatible with the Touch. The sales people I contacted didn't know the answer so I was hoping someone here did before I'm forced to drive to a dealership :).

If you have a late model VW (preferable a 2017) and a Touch 5 or 6, could you please tell me if you are able to select and play music via the car's touchscreen with the Touch connected via USB ?

The iPod doesn't have cellular service so I'm guessing that's why it will not work with CarPlay. I played around with the BMW X3 2017 using my iPhone connected to the USB. I didn't use the CarPlay but the car recognized my music App. I could use the controls on the steering wheel and on the car's touch screen to control my music. I didn't like using the touch screen because it took my eyes away from the road. My eyes navigated quicker on my iPhone than on the touch screen.

What you can do is go to the VW and ask to test drive it. Or ask them to allow you to connect your iPod to one of their cars. On vacations I usually rent a VW. I haven't tested one with a touch screen yet.

We recently bought a 2017 Audi A4 - the electronics may or may not be similar to whatever VW you are contemplating.

I can tell whoever cares that the classic iPod does not work thru the USB interface - it will only play songs thru the audio [3mm] input. No access to play lists or any other metadata.

An iPod Touch connected to a USB port shows up as an Audio player. You can access everything [playlists, genres, albums, etc] through the MMI interface, using the scroll wheel. CarPlay does not work with the iPod Touch, but does with an iPhone.

As others have suggested, your best bet is to take your iPod to the dealer, connect it, and see what happens.

Hope this helps.
