I preordered the iPhone 12. (My better half is still deciding if she wants to upgrade her 11.)
Our Verizon plan is the 55+ Unlimited plan. Have looked into upgrading to one of the plans - at least for my line - that supports 5G data, but from what I have seen on the Verizon maps (we live in central New Jersey), we definitely are not close enough to NYC to get the good 5G wavelengths and even the normal 5G is "spotty". So trying to decide if it is actually worth it.
What are most people - especially those who have older unlimited plans

As of now, no. I’m considering it because of the addition of Hulu and Apple Music, both of which I currently have and pay for. Switching purely for 5G does not make sense for me because I too live in a suburb of a big city and am not going to get the benefits. Especially without any travel happening it’s not even like I’ll have a sporadic opportunity to be in the 5G coverage areas.

I'm in Seattle metro... and 5G is in here pretty good according to the maps that are flooded with coverage. So I upgraded.. not only that but for the Hulu and AM...

I got a $10 discount on my bill for my connected IPPro... so the $20 total increase and the Hulu AM plus 5G was $10 monthly.

No brainer. This was upgrading from Start Unlimited to Get More Unlimited 5G.

I have the old Get More Unlimited Plan that already includes 5G nationwide data and 5G Ultra Wideband data, so I don’t have to change anything except the SIM card once 5G is available in my area.

Depending on your current plan and tenure with Verizon, it may make sense to upgrade. I moved the whole family from a defined shared data plan to an Unlimited Plan (one device with 5UW, the others base Unlimited) and net net it only costs me $10/ month more than before leveraging every discount available.
Test and try what they are willing to offer for the switch.

That's exactly what I did... with the $10 monthly fee bump.

I'm on a Verizon business plan and haven't even explored what the cost would be. If it's the same cost I'll go to a 5G plan. If it goes up, I'll stay where I am.

Ho Ly Shizzzz. Looking at that name, were you an active member on iMore? (Not trying to derail the threads but this is a name I haven’t seen since I was banned from iMore forums about 4 years ago lol)

Upgrading from a dying 6 to the 12 Pro and holding off on changing our plan. My husband still has the first SE and my mom’s 6 is still going strong so I’m the only 5g phone. We are on one of the old size plans (s, m, or l) with shared data limits they had a few years ago. My mom barely uses any data at all. My husband and I are the “heavy” data users but we barely hit 3 gigs any given month and data usage is way down since we’ve been home on WiFi a lot more these last 7 months.

I don't have an unlimited plan, but if I decide to get a new iPhone, which would be the 12 Mini, I will not be upgrading to 5G on my Verizon plan if it costs anything extra.

Just a waste imo, at least for mobile.

I just wished Verizon's 5G @home fixed wireless access service was getting more attention. IMO, that would have a much greater impact many consumers in the US than 5G mobile.

It will be a while before I upgrade any Verizon plan. I like paying only $50 a month for my phone and watch. I am on the 5 GB plan w/rollover. That's all I need. Moving to a 5G plan will cost me another $20 a month. For what? I don't need it. I also don't need unlimited either. I am 90% always on WIFI.

Verizon REQUIRED me to upgrade to a 5G plan when I purchased i phone 12 pro max, increasing my monthly plan by $25. I would have stayed with my unlimited 4G plan, otherwise.

The only reason I switched to Verizon from T-Mobile was the coverage area where I live at was better than T-Mobile. The plan I have already included 5G at no extra charge.
