So i may have bought an iphone 4 on ebay for cheap....

Stuck in recovery mode (I basically didn't do enough research and thought it would be a super easy fix), at first it was only showing the Apple logo, now it's showing the usb connector itunes guff...

I managed to get it to pop with a greenpois0n error message

    "Unable to find gBdevList

    Unable to find fs_mount

    Unable to find fs_unmount

    Unable to find fs_load _file

    Greenpois0n initialized"

, so tried their jailbreaker, no luck... i also tried tiny umbrella, evasi0n, limera1n and redsn0w. Have i ****ed it by using throwing so many things at it?

i don't know what version of ios it had on it before and i don't have any shsh blobs.

is there anyway to make this a working iphone or have just been a cock and bought a fancy paper weight?

(I have become aware of how woefully ignorant i am with jailbreaks so you probably don't have to tell me)

    Thanks

    Sam

Try connecting it to TinyUmbrella and see what firmware is on there now.
Also TinyUmbrella will show which if any blobs are available

    right, an update.

was playing around with redsn0w and actually got it to do something, all fine until it hangs on "Failed to get appleS5L8920XARM7M"

i gave up with it and then now if i try again it'll whizz through loads of tiny writing on the screen of the phone and i dont have time to read any of it and then it just goes back to being in recovery mode

Yes, as it might still be on a 6.x jailbreakable untether, DFU restoring wiil bring it to 6.1.3 losing the untether, always first try to salavage what is on there now.

if im totally wrong here then let me know.

    BUT

if there was just a way to get it into a workable state and restore it back to factory firmware, could i not then do a fresh jailbreak to get whatever i need?

there's nothing on it that needs saving

6.1.3 is a tethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4

If you don't mind the tethered jailbreak.

But if the phone is carrier locked you might not be able to unlock at all or expensive.

Use sn0nbreeze to make a custom 6.1.3 firmware to preserve your BB

Just try this too, still no joy.

Any time i try any firmwares it will just hang on the waiting for reboot bit or will start and the whizz through a load of writing on the iphone screen and then be black again.

Tiny umbrella shows me only the ECID number (occasionally)
sometimes it'll have a number and sometimes it'll just be a big black question mark and a "0" underneath "Recovery Devices" on the left

You are DFU and not in recovery?

Download the 6.1.3 IPSW from here:
    http://m.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

Put phone in DFU and hit ALT-restore(mac) or SHIFT-restore(win)
Select the downloaded IPSW and restore

As a last resort you could always bring it to the Apple store and play dumb, you might just get lucky and they'll help you out with a courtesy replacement.
You could also try actually calling Apple @ 1-800-275-2273, and explaining that there is no physical damage to the phone, and while updating the phone bricked, which sounds to be true based off what I'm reading.

That's very unlikely for a phone that's been 2 years out of warranty but I guess it's worth a try

Apple appropriately tries to please it's consumers, and if the iPhone is in decent physical condition sometimes they'll try to help you out.

If you can push the argument that an iPhone shouldn't be getting bricked at software level, with no physical damage, and say how ridiculous that is, to their Customer Relations department, you could likely get them to fix it for you.

    Right! AHA!

bought a new battery... on the off chance i thought i'd give it a go as the iphone wasnt doing anything when it wasn't plugged into a computer.

    it lives!

unfortunately it's baseband 04.12.05-ICE_2_13 which, as i understand it is un-unlockable via jailbreak...

is the easiest option just going to be restore it to factory settings and put it back on ebay (i could probably actually turn a profit on it tbh) and just get one that i know will work and isn't going to be a jolly jaunt into the fields of ignorance?

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Easiest is to buy a cheap IMEI unlock online, checkout the IMEI thread in the forum
