You know, I don't know why none of us thought of this solution before--Hear me out.

Tax isn't your problem. Your problem is the cost of the computer.
If you don't have to pay for the computer, there are no taxes to be paid.;)
So you know...just..."gank"/"borrow permanently"/"five finger discount"... total tax problem solved.

It was staring us right in the eyes. Life could be so simple:rolleyes:

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight....

Not to thread jack, but does anyone know how the tax holiday will work with the free IPOD promotion? I assume that we would pay tax on the IPOD and not on the computer. Will APPLE have issue doing this and keeping it on the same reciept for the reabte?

Anyone have the same issue in 2006?

In MA during tax free weekend, everything is tax free, up to 3k or something. So mac + ipod would be tax free on a single receipt.

Gosh, so many cheapos.

It's tax. Get over it. Are you going to flee the country when 30% of your income is eaten by the IRS?

There are only a few certain things in life: death and taxes.

I notice that in my mom's school they don't charge tax on their online store...

UC Berkeley Univ. on the Apple Online store.

Can't you buy it, pay tax, and when you file your taxes claim it as an education expense?

Ha, this is what I was about to say. I'm in WA, and I confirmed that the Berkeley store (I'm an incoming student) won't charge WA or CA sales tax. Obviously, they offer the student discount.

However, they do charge shipping of ~$20. Also, they're not doing the $100 printer rebate (they are doing the iPod special though). So it's still cheaper, but not by much.

But if you don't need a printer, it's way cheaper.

It would be so interesting to see how the person votes. I suppose the annoyance of the tax they would be so glad to see the rest of us pay for the roads we all drive on, etc., is getting to them. Don't get me wrong, I pay a ton and think a lot is wasted, but nothing is free. Glad to see students get a break here and there but they use the services too.

Are you joking? Do you think sales tax goes to "building roads"? That tax is automatically taken out when you fill your gas pump! It's in the "State Tax" on each gallon of Gas. Then there is Federal Tax which goes to the government.

Apple gives students about $200 off the Mac Pros and a few other discounts on the ACD etc, which is really nice....but then the Tax kills it if you get a high end system.

Tax is not used fairly anymore, it just goes in the pockets of billionaires.

Amazing... The taxes I pay kill a lot of things for my family too. I have trouble with the concept that I pay a lot and lots pay nothing. The tax is part of the price, not a new concept. Buy from Amazon, the rebate plus no tax will be a better price than the student discount.

Actually shipping is free on items over 50$ and I think the printer rebate is still in that store? Because I see the rebate every time I finish customizing my "dream"/"future" system...

Tax is tax. Who really knows how it all works? I doubt gas tax is used exclusively for roads. The govt has leeway to do what they want with it. But it doesn't go in the pockets of millionaires. It goes not just to roads, but also schools, health care, public projects, etc., i.e. back to the people in some form of service.

The only way to get edu pricing and not pay tax (aside from tax free states and weekends) is to actually be a tax exempt institution (like a public school) and to purchase for said institution. You just need to provide your tax-exempt ID to the Apple Sales guy. At work, we do it over the phone.

I've paid tax on every machine I've purchased for myself. That's fine. I don't mind. It's a fact of life and it's how our country works.

I don't think so. I can't even claim my tuition fees as an education expense. I think my parents or I theoretically could deduct part of my fees from their income, but the accountant said that it would be insignificant.

What do I is deduct the computer as a "business expense" since I work as a self-employed web designer. So my taxable income is smaller. But I still pay sales tax.

When filing income taxes, you can assign a portion of your computer expenses including internet connections, etc that are actually used for education purposes. For example, I use my computer and internet connection about 25% of the time for school and the rest of the time for personal use. 25% of the total I spent can then be added to my educational deductions and reduce my taxable income based on the lifetime learning deductions. At least that is how I think it works. :)

That makes sense. That probably works for most people.

I think that's why my accountant does it differently for me though. He substracts 100% as a business expense instead of 25% as an edu expense, I though I definitely used my mac more for school than work when I was in school.

I hate the intricacies of taxes. But that's why we have accountants. :)
