On my PC i used a program called WAMP which basically made a server out of my hdd so I could accurately make websites without the need for repeated uploads etc.
Is there a similar thing out there I can get for my mac now I've moved over to OSX ?

YUP, It's called MAMP pretty much the same exact thing. There's also another one that runs on Mac (XAMPP), but I think MAMP is better personally.

To enable Apache, start Web Sharing under Sharing in System Preferences.

If you don't need MySQL but do need PHP, try this.
