According to comments made to MacWorld, Apple will also be releasing a fully featured 30-day demo of Aperture as well as new camera RAW support (Nikon D80, Canon XTI).

Very cool!! I've been wanting to test drive this app for some time now. I have been using the Adobe Lightroom beta for a few weeks now and really wanted to compare the two. I'm new to this type of "Pro" level application but I have seen enough of Lightroom to know I will probably buy it (or something like it) some time this coming year. I'm glad I will be able to check out Apple's offering.

.....downloading now..... :)

What's weird is the demo is version 1.5... I had to upgrade to 1.5.1, another 130MB download

Still... demo = coolness :)

Use the Compatibility checker in the right hand column (here: http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/ ) to check and see. It's a small 100+ kb download.

Wow so glad Apple did this, I just downloaded Adobe Lightroom Beta a couple days ago, so much to play with and learn! Should be great to compare. :)
I never thought Apple would ever release a compatibility checker. I got my demo and it's time to try it out.

I can use it to make a DVD slideshow using some photos (3 CD's of them) I have around right? I just got a small project to do that. :D

iMac G5

I will be interested in reports about how this update runs on the iMac G5. I ordered it along with my 17" MacBook Pro (est ship date 11/7:( ) Aperture already arrived and I have not put it on my iMac because I fear it will run glacially slow.

It will also be interesting how it compares to Nikon Capture with the RAW files from my D200.

This is excellent news (the demo).. as I'm very keen to try it out, but reluctant to throw money at it without having a good hack at it...

great stuff!!

Sadly I can't update -I have the Academic version... Any way around this?

The academic version can be updated to 1.5.1 just fine. Don't let the sticker on the box stop you from trying! The first ineligible update should be when Aperture gets bumped to version 2.0 - some time next year, most likely.

For what it's worth, and I hate to bring out the old cliché, 1.5.1 feels a little snappier for me on my Powerbook. Nice work, Apple. Hopefully it also fixes the random "make the screen go completely black in full screen editing" issue I've had since 1.1.

I must be doing something wrong then... It's not showing in my "software update", and when I try to download it from the Apple page it won't accept my software ID...

They won't let you download the free trial unless you agree to let them spam you. WTF?

What annoyed me is that if you purchased a new professional (i.e. photographer for example) machine only 3 months ago (PowerMac or MacBook Pro) you can't run this machine with the basic specification, you need to upgrade the RAM.

Sorry Apple not very impressed with that.

It's barely going to be usable on 512Mb of RAM. For professional usage I'm surprised you can put up with using the machine at all with only 512Mb of RAM

Hi everyone,

I installed the 30 day trial on my 1st gen iMac G5 and 12" powerbook last night and it worked well. Took a little while to get it on the powerbook, but after it installed i was very suprised how well it worked. Installed perfectly on the iMac. Ok, it's not gonna be blazing fast like the current hardware, it in my opinion is was certainly usable, i thought comparable with Adobe Lightroom. It worked well on the iMac as well, better than i expected. Both machines have max RAM. I've only tested with about 800 images in the library, but i intend to put around 10k of images in so i'll post my results. Images are mixture of 6meg NEF, RAF, jpg and jpg scans.

This update goes to show just how awful the 1.0 release of Aperture really was. Even with the .5 update, it didn't fix most of the programs addressed in this update.

What Apple has done with the Aperture updates is REALLY good...this is how it should be...;)

I have the academic version as well, and was able to download the 1.5.1 updater from the Apple/Aperture webpage with no problem, save for one slight bit of weirdness: I entered my serial number, clicked the 'download' button, and nothing happened, except for the serial number field going blank. No download started. I entered the serial number again, and it brought me to the download page where I was able to get the update with no problem.

Thanks

Hey Deanomac:

Thanks for the mini performance review. I think I will install it on my G5 and give it a whirl. I have 2GB of RAM in it and I think that is one think that does speed it up.

I have a 2ghz black Macbook with 1GB ram. I have been thinking about buying Aperture for some time so I was pleased to see the demo option. I downloaded it today but, unfortunately, it is pretty much unusable on my machine. The CPU usage goes up to 150%, the fans come on and everything locks up. I ended up deleting the demo. Still, it saved me buying it...shame though as it looked good.

I have the same machine, but with 2gig. Aperture works great. I wonder if it is only the RAM that is affecting your machine, or something else? It looks like a cool app.

Finally!

Just got back from Tasmania today. I've been using Adobe Lightroom Beta 4.1 for months and love it. I hated Aperture when I got a chance to use it, but that was back in it's infancy and I want to give it another go.

I'll import my photos to both programs and see how I like Aperture, although right now, I can't see myself leaving that amazing Tone Curve editing feature in Lightroom behind.

I have a 1.83 GHz MacBook with 1.5 GB of RAM. I'll tell you if it's fast or not relative to Lightroom. :)

How about some info on how to use Aperture

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to download a tutorial or watch several video tutorials (even better) one how to use Aperture? I am looking for something that will offer me the basics, but allow me to progress to more involved uses. I am sure there is something out there and likely Aperture even comes with some guide, but I (hopefully like you, unless you already own it) am taking advantage of this free 30-day trial Apple is offering on their website and wanted a quick way to get going. I am aware of the tutorials Apple offers on the Aperture page, but really don't cover much of the graphical editing features. Thanks
