Well looks like my streak of using Apple Aperture may have ended.

Aperture 3.6 will not upload from iPhone 7+ and iOS 10.1.1
It worked under 10.1 and prior, but now i'm stuck at this "loading assets" spinning thing and 3783 files .... hitting import does not work, can't select don't import duplicates, it's a new bug ... and they are not supporting fixes

Apple has given Aperture users years of warning...first with no Aperture development or releases and then the announcement of it being replaced with Photos.

Aperture not working should not catch anyone flat footed. Past time to move on.

Well you can just import with image capture to a folder and then to Aperture. And that is not the only workaround. Also could be you simply need to reset something. I think in general Apple still is supporting Aperture under Sierra.

Yes - I bit the bullet and upgraded to Sierra this weekend and now it does upload the photos from my new iPhone 7+.
So, my issue "solved", and since my workflow is so simple and memorized I'm still sticking with Aperture until Apple ups their game and give Photos some of the editing power that Aperture had/has.

I still won't give up on Aperture either and stick with the Capitan at the moment just because I am not sure how compatible Sierra really is with Aperture.

My upgrade path will be Photos plus an external editor like Affinity photos.

In my experience, Aperture seems to work just fine with Sierra. And as OP observed, the current OS appears necessary to use Aperture with iPhone 7.

Your "upgrade" path is one I am considering as well. I don't like Photos nearly as much, but it seems like the path of least resistance overall.

Apple will never make Photos have the same power and flexibilty as Aperture, a free app vs. a paid app is one reason. Another reason is that apple has a long history of leaving their apps untouched and third reason. The photos app is for consumers, not prosumers/professionals which was Aperture's Market.

Also consider the cost of using Aperture, the longer you wait the more likely that it will stop working, and it may stop working at a time that is crucial for you to get a task done. Also the work to migrate to another application is only take more and more time as you add more images to Aperture.
