Aperture Photo Library

All my photos are on my iMac but I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro. How can I go about transferring the pictures from the iMac to to the MacBook Pro? I thought I could do this over my wireless network but I can't see my iMac listed in devices, I do have a HP MEDIASMART Server but when I try and copy the Aperture library it usually fails after several gig.

Any other recommendations?

This might sound silly but I hoped when both my iMac and MacBook Pro were turned on and connected to the same wireless network they would show up in finder under shared but they are not :-(
