Is there a way to get Aperture to recognize those videos?

This is my biggest hold up to getting Aperture. I mostly use my iPhone for pics and movies and iPhoto does a great job of handling both, but my library's nearly 50GB and I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. Please share what you find. I haven't found a better, easier app for handling home made video organization than iPhoto.

A few more questions. People have said you can't do calendars? Could you still do it in iphoto or will your new pics only show up in Aperture instead of iPhoto? Basically i guess i'm asking, when i'm trying to import new pics from a camera, i'd be doing that through Aperature instead of iPhoto. Correct

If you make the switch then yes, all imports will be in Aperture only. You are correct that the only thing you can do in Aperture is Books. However, as long as you keep iPhoto on your machine, within iPhoto -> File menu there is a Show Aperture Library option. This opens the media browser to your Aperture library and allows you to find and drag into iPhoto the images you want to make a calendar/cards out of. Not perfect, but easier than exporting/importing.

Also Aperture does not display a number of videos and says video format is unsupported. However those videos play fine in iPhoto.

Is there a way to get Aperture to recognize those videos?

What format are the videos?

the main reasons for me to switch to aperture would be increased speed and stability and most importantly the fact that aperture does not create a new copy of a pic for every edit. this should save disk space.

what happens when I transfer my iPhoto library with all the original pics hidden in my iPhoto library? do they get ignored or do they get transferred into the new library as well? I actually don't want to keep the unedited originals. this should reduce my library by about 3GB.

i want to keep only the aperture library in the long run. do I need to delete my iPhoto library after the migration manually?

Not sure about hidden photos. The Aperture import from iPhoto will bring everything over, including originals, and changes. It will also bring over Faces/Places info. If you didn't want this, I think within Aperture you can open the iPhoto Library viewer and manually drag images in.

I'm on a 2010 Mac Pro, with a 100GB iPhoto library (over 36,000 photos and videos). I got a new machine because my 2006 Mac Pro was having issues with iPhoto '11. I will say this Mac Pro runs iPhoto '11 fine, but it is still slow. I think Apple really messed up with iPhoto '11. However, I jumped on the opportunity to get Aperture for $80! I can say without a doubt that this version of Aperture SCREAMS! My same 100GB library is sooooo responsive in Aperture. Scrolling is fast, editing is fast....I'm loving the move.

For anyone contemplating getting it....or if you did get it, make sure to check out the full documentation that Apple posts online:

I have .AVI files from various Canon point and shoots, .MOV files from a Nikon D3100 and a bunch of .MOV from our iPhones, Aperture handles all of them. In fact, responsiveness with videos for me is much better in Aperture than iPhoto.

Hi! I too tried the trial and loved it. I first quit Aperture and then went to the Picture folder and used Get Info (right click or control click) to change the "Aperture 3 Trail Library.aplibrary" to "Aperture Library.aplibrary". Then when Aperture starts it will ask you which Library to use, and you select the "Apeture Library". You can renamed it whatever you like. Hope this helps.

This worked! Thank you for your help

Good to hear. Guess I'll have to give the trial a trial.

I haven't used Aperture but it looks like a PS stripped down to the basics. I'm perfectly happy using the PS/iPhoto combination.

You don't know what you're talking about. Aperture is more of a Pro iPhoto with a lot of powerful RAW related editing features. It is not a stripped down photoshop anymore than LightRoom is.

after import my Aperture library is 51GB and the iPhoto library was 57GB. So there is some space saving but not much now. Going forward it should make a huge difference. I also will manually delete rotated pics.

The videos Apertutre didn't display are old "muxed" mpeg videos from a P&S camera. However you can right click and watch then in quicktime. Not great but at least a workaround. The problem is well known but Apple does not support old formats in Aperture anymore.

All in all Aperture feels faster than iPhoto on my Core i7 MBP with 4GB and a 5400RPM HD. The UI of iPhoto is much simpler and nicer however. But the ability to edit/fix photos in Aperture is much better than in iPhoto.

I bought Aperture last year after using iPhoto for years. Enormous difference. nIn fact, for most daily edits and minor tweaks, I find Aperture can compete with Photoshop.

Could you elaborate? I'm currently debating the switch myself...

It's incredible: i'm having the opposite experience.
My Aperture 3 is really slow (on iMac last version and MBA last version too).
20,000 and more photos
I'm thinking to come back to iPhoto 2011 ...

Do you have the most recent versions and Lion and Aperture installed? When Lion first came out, Aperture turned dog slow. After some iterations in Lion and also Aperture, it is fast again - actually seems faster on my 2008 iMac than before Lion.
