Well, what a depressing example of humanity this forum thread has been.

So many people shilling and trying to justify awful behavior from Reddit and Steve Huffman.
I struggle to be sympathetic in this situation. It sucks for Christian but on the other hand he's made more than most people would off of an app and he's a smart guy so I'm sure he'll be fine. It just seems like a lot of people here are playing the "oh no, our poor indie dev!" card but not quite realising how much money Apollo was estimated to have made.

Not defending Huffman btw, that guy's just a dick and seemed to **** up every decision in this story.

When times are easy, Selig a vocal proponent for subscription pricing. When times are difficult, Selig sings a different tune.

Bad looks galore for him and for Apollo. He releases Ultra-only features that are half-baked. He leaves those half-baked features unaddressed in subsequent updates. He engages in obnoxious upselling all throughout holiday seasons. He lies about it, too, saying that the upselling is just a bug.

Apollo may well be best in class but this huge extent to which Selig and the app go unquestioned -- it's ridiculous.

I bought Ultra less than one year ago. It's too late for me to request a refund but even if I could do so I would not. There's risk to 'buy once'. There's risk to subscription pricing too. It's lame for Selig to 'offer' this 'option'.

@sjsharksfan12 Time flies, and it’s been a month. How’s life without Reddit now?

The saga continues.

For me, sucks that there are a few forums I can’t interact with anymore, but life goes on.

I miss talking sports and the local teams but life is good. I’ve spent more time on forums like these and another one though. Considering all the controversies I’ve see with Reddit, I’m glad I left when I did.

Someone posted the transcript of his call with Reddit - didn't he try to get $10M out of them to 'go quietly' (ie for no benefit to Reddit at all other than not trying to stir up resentment against Reddit)? That sounded suspiciously like blackmail. And further to the point, his suggestion of $10M was him cutting in half what he estimated was the economic impact of HIS APP and what it was costing Reddit in terms of free API usage. Like, what? You know you're costing us $20M a year in free API hits, but you think we should pay for half again of that amount of damage you're causing to have you not raise a stink about us stopping that damage?
Well, yes, the developer was that someone. So you think he did it to incriminate himself? Interesting logic, but there is lots of strange logic here. Personally, it sounded like a boneheaded joke one should/would only make with a company one was very, very comfortable working with, which truly makes it terrible business move. As I said earlier, there appear to be multiple boneheaded business moves on both sides, so it seems more likely to me that this was the dumb comment he claimed it was, rather than him releasing transcripts that he knew would incriminate himself. I believe that he thought he had a much better relationship with the company than he obviously did, and he figured they were throwing a huge number out to test the waters and he threw big numbers back. Not really unusual in a lot of negotiations (more or less calling bull), but you really need to know your business partners’ expectations/intentions if you are going to pull that move. As I’ve said earlier, I disagree with the portrayal of either side being evil, I just figure this was an extremely poorly done business transaction for both sides. If this outcome was the actual plan of either side, it truly makes no sense.

Personally, I still don’t get the blackmail thing. Blackmailing usually involves pay me money or I’ll do something you won’t want me to do; I’m not sure what it is Christian said he would do that could be interpreted as a threat.

"Pay me $10M or I won't stop the avalanche of bad press/feelings that are being directed towards Reddit on my behalf."

Seems like a pretty huge stretch, considering the comment pre-dated the “bad press/feelings”. And beyond that not even having happened yet at that point, I’m not sure why you think he could stop the bad press later, since he wasn’t the only developer affected by the API changes.
