App for changing icons (or how to)?

Is there a freeware app that would allow me to change icons on folders, etc.

I see candybar3 does this, but it is nearly $30. That is a bit pricey in my opinion to change icons. Are there any free alternatives?

Can you manually change the icon if you download an icon pack?

you can do this manually by getting info on the icon file, clicking and copying its icon on the top left of the get info window & then pasting this onto the icon in the get info window of the folder which you want to change. make sure you are able to write to this folder as it creates an invisible file inside the folder.

to change system icons such as the default folder & disk icons, finder, trash etc i recommend candybar. its much easier this way.
