App for host computer to access files through browser

Like the title says, I am looking for an application that allows one to browse a computer's files through any internet browser, in or outside the network. This would in essence be a program running in the background of the host computer like a webserver.

There are a few of iPhone applications that do this (LookSee, FarFinder), but I am looking for a computer optimized browser interface. FarFinder is an example of what I am looking for, but $35 is a little much. Also just want to see my alternatives.
