macOS App sending data into and out of Numbers?

I'm idly wondering about getting data in and out of Numbers from within another application. Under Windows I'd use COM/ActiveX/Whatever-they-call-it-this-week to open a spreadsheet and get or put the data.

What method could I use for OSX, assuming there is one? Would AppleScript be able to do it?

Yes, and as far as I can tell AppleScript looks to be the only realistic way of doing it. I doubt I'll be working on it yet, but I wanted have a rough idea of what to do so I can plan accordingly.

You could investigate the NSApplescript class.
