Starting in July, ads in the App Store's Today tab will have a more compact design and be fully visible without any scrolling. The new ad format will include the app's icon, name, and subtitle, along with an "Ad" label and a "Get" button.

The new ad format will be shown on iPhones running iOS 16.4 and later. Today tab ads will not be available on iOS 16.3 and earlier. Existing ads will automatically switch to the new format in July, with no action required from advertisers.

Ads in the Today tab currently appear as a full-height card that can only be viewed after scrolling past the first unsponsored slot.

Since the ads will no longer have a custom graphic, Apple says the approval process will be quicker and easier. The compact format will also make the ads more distinguishable from unsponsored content in the Today tab, so this is a change that should be well received by both advertisers and App Store users.

Apple began showing ads in the Today tab in October 2022. The upcoming ad format change was first reported by 9to5Mac.

The whole App Store became a untrustworthy Ad to be honest. I mostly use it to search for an app that I may randomly have heard of elsewhere. I don’t even trust their „Editors Choice“ label anymore. Seems like a badge you can just buy and app ratings? Forget it! So many apps have actually 1 star FEEDBACK when you filter by recent yet the over all score is close to 5? Shenanigans going on there by those devs as well

Don’t they make enough money in the App Store? Just seems gluttonous, I only go in for updates any more and even that’s too much with all the junk ads!
Too bad there is no authority to regulate the amount of ads these companies are torturing us with.

I wonder how much money Apple makes from these ads. Is it really that significant?
$109 billion in ad revenue for 2022 (and that's just from iOS in-app advertising alone)

Today, developers on the App Store have more ways than ever to monetize their apps and build successful businesses. The economists from Analysis Group estimate that last year, App Store developers generated $910 billion in total billings and sales from the sale of physical goods and services, $109 billion from in-app advertising, and $104 billion for digital goods and services.

That's a big increase from prior years after Apple increased the number of ads they run across their apps and stores

Those are certainly eye-popping numbers! But I was wondering how much does Apple get paid by devs sponsoring ads for their apps to be shown prominently on the App Store?

Therefore you couldn’t argue that it is. Because it’s not paid placement.
Advertisement: "a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy." We typically think of ads as paid but that's only a subset of advertising. They don't have to be paid. Any time someone promotes a product or service or event, it's an ad. MacRumors is mostly ads for Apple products and services. MacRumors isn't paid by Apple but it's still advertising for Apple. That's okay, what Apple is doing is what brings us to the site.
