How nice. Bye bye software updates. Could anyone make any sense out of this or offer me any advice on how to fix this problem? Problem began after repairing disk permissions.

It appears that you are running 10.8.2. My recommendation is to manually download the 10.8.3 Combo Update and install it.

The Combo updater will sometimes fix issues that a point (like 10.8.2 to 10.8.3) update won't fix. And will also sometimes fix something that got broken by something else.

As to what caused it.. are you running any Mac "cleaning" software or Mackeeper? That would be the most likely culprit.
