As noted [Google translation] by Mackinando, Apple has announced that promo codes for App Store applications are no longer limited to U.S. customers.
Your promo code distribution is no longer limited to U.S. customers. Promo codes in iTunes Connect can now be redeemed by all App Store customers worldwide. Your Team Agent can request 50 codes per version of your app in iTunes Connect and your customers can redeem these codes in any App Store. To learn more about requesting promo codes in iTunes Connect, see the iTunes Connect Developer Guide.
The change will allow developers to get free copies of their applications into the hands of more users, whether it be for review purposes for publications or for giveaways.

Apple allows developers to generate up to 50 promo codes per update of an application, and the codes are good for four weeks after generation.

At last! Slowly but surely, Apple continues to improve things. The App Store is quite different (and generally rather more pleasant) from what it was 2 years ago, both on the customer and developer sides.

Yes, Finally! Good to see Apple continue to improve things, even small stuff like this.

This is a dream come true, we launched our app last Friday. We made the Top 100 rank with in New Zealand in 4 days, now we get to use promo codes. It just keeps getting better and better. Merry Christmas to you too Apple! :)

Superb news!

One thing to note is any codes that have already been requested will still only work in the US App Store - this change only applies to new code requests.

Now I can finally give out Lead Wars promos in my home country!

Does this mean I can gift apps in iTunes across countries? I live in Canada and want to buy an app for someone in the USA... Can I do that?

I realize this is 2 years later but I can't find it being discussed anywhere else:

What about the Mac App Store's promo codes? It seems to me that those are still US only.

If I set someone up on iTunes Connect as being associated with the project and from Germany, would it allow them to get codes that work in Germany?

(I guess I aught to just start a new topic in the App Store business section.)
