$29.3 billion was spent overall on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store, with over 35.6 billion app installs, in the third quarter of 2020, according to a new report by Sensor Tower.

App stores have seen significant year-on-year growth, with customers spending 32 percent more than at the same time in 2019, with 23.3 percent more installs. This is a large growth compared to 24 percent increased spending and nine percent increased downloads last year.

Spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions, and premium apps rose by 31 percent to $19 billion worldwide on Apple's App Store in the third quarter, up from $14.5 billion at the same time last year. This is almost twice the revenue earned by Google's Play Store, consistent with last year's split between the two platforms. However, of the 36.5 billion app installs, Apple's App Store only accounted for 8.2 billion, whereas the Google Play Store had over three times as many at 28.3 billion.

Short-form video social media app TikTok was the most downloaded app on both platforms, and it was also the highest-earning non-game app globally. This was its second consecutive quarter as the top-grossing non-game app. At this time last year, Tinder was the highest-grossing non-game app. As in previous quarters, Facebook's apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, made up the majority of the top five non-game apps by global downloads, although none occupied the top spot.

Tencent took the first and second positions among the five top-grossing games in the third quarter with "Honor of Kings" and "PUBG Mobile." Together, the top five highest-grossing games made more than $2.4 billion, which is 12 percent of all consumer spending on mobile games last quarter. Game installs decreased year on year for Apple's App Store from 2.4 billion to 2.3 billion, with the vast majority of downloads instead being from Google Play, which saw growth of 36.8 percent.

Sensor Tower analysts believe that going into the fourth quarter, new trends will emerge, as will new standout apps, partly driven by platform innovations such as home screen customization on iOS. A full report on global app adoption with specific analyses of top publishers and trends for the third quarter is expected soon.

Developers are so greedy and all they do is cry.

You should set up your own store, you would do it for free, right?
Um, you can't set up your own app store for iPhone, thus why Apple is under scrutiny.

Looking at some of the top apps and games, I am worried about the human race!

... and?
Google and Android devices remain a popular alternative to Apple and iOS devices, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon so really, who cares other than financial wonks, analysts and Apple fanboys?
That's like saying: Who cares if First World countries have better standard of living, China has the highest population and I don't see that changing any time soon.

There’s a lot that can be unpacked from this observation.

For example, we know that developers tend to favour iOS first because that’s where the paying customers are and this finding is testament to it. It also means that iOS users can expect developers to release apps for their platform first and foremost, which is again a strong reason to choose an iPhone over android. These apps also tend to be better designed and more likely to support the latest iOS features and APIs.

All of which come together to ensure a superior app experience for iOS over android.

Given that there are almost a billion active iPhone users (and a smaller but not inconsequential number of iPad users), I will say that there are a lot of people who would care, and are in a position to care.

amazing what you can do when you steal 30% (and yeah i know google does it too)
So why is a 30% theft on games in the Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo walled environment acceptable? I mean, if the argument, in general, being made is that mobile phones (well, really just Apples) aren't any different from PC or laptops computers and there for should be treated as such -- then no one should be giving console manufacturers a pass on this, either.

You can't even pretend that Sony and Microsoft systems aren't PCs. Their CPUs and GPUs are from AMD, Intel, or nVidia. Sure, allow the whole PSN / XBLive thing and allow developers to use that infrastructure if they find value in it. But, also just let me access my Steam library on my console, too. If a developer doesn't want 30% stolen, just allow them to sell their game on their own website for download to my PS4/5 or Xbox.

Tough cookies if Sony and Microsoft are selling these consoles at a loss - They need to make their money up front on the hardware, like Nintendo, and everyone else selling a PC, and just let me use the PC that I bought from them as that, a gaming PC. Optionally, charge for connection to their convenient online gaming system attached to it.

I mean, I know Epic isn't interested in getting Fortnite tossed off Playstation and Xbox, as well, so that's why they make up an excuse to give them a pass. But, anyone criticizing Apple and demanding Apple open up - should be doing the same of video game console makers. Your beloved game developers are being stolen from.

now wait for all the angry apple folks to get up from their naps

This statement makes absolutely zero sense in this context.

Are you suggesting that the iOS App Store is as lucrative as it is for the developers because of the 30% cut that Apple takes from them?

Rather, what this shows is that Apple has aggregated the best customers thanks to the iphone, as well as make it extremely easy for customers to purchase apps, by having their credit card details on hand (iTunes) and making it easy and secure to pay for stuff with (thanks to Touch ID and Face ID). By locking down the App Store and vetting the apps that pass through it, users trust that apps are safe and are thus more open to downloading them, resulting in greater sales. You also have a much lower incidence of piracy because you cannot sideload apps, which also leads to more people paying for apps than they otherwise would have.

This shows the immense effort and resources that Apple has invested in growing the pie for developers, all of whom are able to access this large pool of lucrative spenders all in one place. Even after taking its 30% cut, developers are likely to still earn more than if they had tried to sell their app through an online website and get users to visit their portal.

30% seems more than fair.

Its interesting that Google makes almost just as much money given that you can install any app store on an Android device.

How does the App store make money from TikTok? There are no in-app purchases?
it doesn't. They obviously pay their annual developer fee (which is tiny) but if an app is free and has no in-app-purchases Apple makes nothing from the app.

Many choose to pay to promote the app in the app store but thats about it.

This is one of the things that makes the (industry standard) 30% acceptable by developers. You still get access to all the infrastructure without having to fork anything out for it.

For example I've got a bunch of apps that make use of cloud kit, game center etc that are 100% free. They cost apple money (all be it peanuts). It's countered by the fact that I've got others that make a nice healthy profit for me and Apple (and Google but play store sales are crap).

Sure you can. Just post full source code and the Xcode project on GitHub, link from your unknown website, and have your app display a PayPal or Patreon (et.al.) donate button. Then see how much greater your revenue will be without Apple's 30% cut for mere distribution and copy protection. o_O
