It seems none of you read the article. This is preventing third party APPS from solely displaying the time. This is to prevent confusion among users. I am sure in WatchKit 2.0 it'll be possible to make new faces.

It's curious then that Apple has no way for their built-in digital watch faces to show seconds. Didn't they think that might be important for some people?

Wouldn't that drain the battery faster? Might be the reason they didn't make that options available to start with.

Look, they have mickey mouse, but no mini. This is sexism! And then not allowing developers to create female watch faces takes it to a whole new level. Where are the feminist when you need them?

They will be touting this as a feature in future generations.
Yes, when developers are able to produce native watch apps.

One thing the Apple Watch can do without an iPhone nearby is tell the time. A watch-face glance that requires the phone to be present wouldn't be a good idea.

So, if you want your watch to show decimal time you're screwed with the Apple Watch, I guess.

why not just call this site applewatch.com? :(

That's funny. I remember when the iPhone came out, and everyone complained about the iPhone coverage. Then I remember when the iPad came out and everyone complained about the iPad coverage. Now we have the Apple Watch and people are complaining about that coverage, too.

Wow! Missing the boat!

The ability to customize your watch with a bunch of different faces could be one of the most appealing features of the IWatch. To be limited to just Apple faces is pretty poor. Maybe Apple is afraid of being sued for designs similar to other watch faces.

contgrats to all of the people that bought an :apple:watch... you now have a glorified screen saver on your wrist....

btw that force touch does not look smooth at all...

Guys... GUYS... (and/or gals)... Settle down.

This doesn't mean Apple will never let developers create watch faces. Rather, they currently don't want Apple Watch apps to be time-focused. Which could be due to concerns on quality and don't want watch faces outside of their watch face app tool.

It's still possible that they'll provide developers with a specific set of rules or tools in the future for creating watch faces for their watch face app so that they can still guarantee accurate time keeping, proper customization, etc.

Not to say you shouldn't voice your opinion and let Apple know you're interested in seeing 3rd party work, just don't take it like some personal offense. The world isn't ending and things aren't aways as simple as they seem.

What? Everyone read the article. You just misunderstood what you read.;) The prohibition is against watch apps that primarily display time. Primarily, as in main function. Not soley, meaning only.

It's not to prevent confusion among customers. That makes no sense. Customers usually don't get confused by time. It's more likely related to that tiny battery and preserving the expected battery life. Apple will probably release an APK soon so any developer creating watch faces won't be shooting from the hip with code that's sloppy and battery intensive.

Confusion. tehe:D

New item. New processes. They're just being precautionary with the battery. Once the release a new Watchkit I'm pretty sure watchfaces will be available.

Apple can't be sued for a dev violating someone else's copyrighted designs. That's not an issue.

I hear you. I really like the aesthetic of seeing seconds on a digital face.

That said, as I think about it, unless I'm using a stopwatch I'm not so concerned with that degree of accuracy. A quick glance is all I need to get the time and even though my current watch displays seconds, I don't recall ever using that for normal time telling. Unless, again, I'm using a stopwatch or timer feature.

So ... I'm not disagreeing with you. I can definitely see the reasons it may be important to people, but I can understand some of the reasons Apple may not have felt compelled to include that feature (at the current time).

Once again Apple is being help to an unfair higher standard.

Does Rolex allow a third party to custom build a watch face that is supported by Rolex? No. I think not!

Rolex doesn't really have any say-so. Once you own a Rolex you can do whatever you like to it. Paint a giant PacMan on it if you like. But you are really comparing two different things here. A Rolex is an analog watch with a fixed face. There really is no way to create interchangeable faces like on a watch.

And I don't think Apple is being held to an unfair standard. It's a little silly a 3rd party dev can't sell approved watch faces. If its a matter of security or OS integrity then I see Apple's point, but I'm unsure that is why Apple is disallowing faces.

This kinda sucks. I don't own an apple watch, though I do have a pebble. One thing that bugs me is that it is a square watch, why not have a square watch face? Why stick a round peg in a square hole?

Well, you do know that the watch face would be running off the Iphone... That maybe why they don't allow it. Once they can go native, maybe they will.
