"Less relevant items are not displayed".

This the message you get after iTunes loads the 500th App title from most search results. This is clearly a false statement; I released an app nearly a week ago but it has had not a single download. This is likely because it doesn't show in all but one of my keyword searches when it is obviously more relevant to all other keywords than many apps that are displayed.

So, how does an app get displayed? What makes it more "relevant"?

I doubt I'll get a useful answer but I do know that due to the sheer volume of apps, the App Store search is absolutely broken and is of little to no use to those releasing new apps.

Can I expect Apple to correct or even recognize this failure?

I imagine it's pretty simple...The more downloads and search hits an app gets, the higher up the list it will go....It would be impossible to list them all, as you say, with so many apps out there it's tough to get noticed.

For any given keyword, how will an app get more search hits than the 500 apps already displayed? It can't....it can only ever get the same number! ...and if it is never displayed, it will never be downloaded. See the problem?? It is beyond tough, it is impossible.

That's why developers promote their apps through various means.
