App Store updates question

Is the Store smart enough to know what version iOS the device has?

Would not like to 'Update' then find the newer version was not compatible.
 
Yes, my iOS 3.1.3 devices are getting fewer and fewer updates. But my iOS 4.3.X devices are getting updates for the same apps.
