I can think of very few examples where iOS does such a poor job of managing space as the task switcher on iPhone X. It currently shows very large thumbnails of windows whose only purpose is to possibly be closed.

This should show little thumbnails on top and control centre buttons below. If you swipe up on an up you will see that it gets smaller and is still perfectly viewable thanks to the sharp screen. One could easily add two rows of control buttons below the smaller thumbnails.

I can’t believe that this wasn’t the approach to adding control panel to iPhone X.

Talk about a messy UI with unrelated things bunched together.

(And the app switcher's purpose isn't just to close apps, it's to switch between them--as its very name implies--with closing being a secondary feature at best.)

True that. But again, there is no need IMO to have such huge thumbnails to figure out what each app is before switching to it.

Empty space is not always a bad thing. It looks good and does what it's supposed to.

Why not just swipe up on the app you are on and then open the app you want. Faster.

No need? I use those huge "thumbnails" fairly regularly when what I need to see is visible in switcher view. For example, I might have a text message or email with a code I need to enter into another app (and I either can't see it in the notification shade or I have already closed the notification). I have often been able to see what I need in the switcher without having to open the other app. So I would not like the switcher's view to get any smaller thank you very much. To me it is a crude multi-view but useful for me nonetheless.
