Does any one know of an app that will allow one to switch between running apps (e.g., an eBook and a dictionary, or a podcast and Safari) without going through the home screen?

You haven't heard of the SDK limits, huh?
Well, Apple won't allow a "real" 3rd party application to do this at all. Applications coming from the App Store will only be confined to their sandbox and that's it. No background processes and NOOO changing of Mac OS X!
Maybe there's a jailbreak app that'll do this... I don't know of one, though.
