Just set up my new MacBook Pro 14 and discovered I have "lost" my old VLC app which was used to play some old 8mm movies that were digitized. Then discovered that the VLC app is not one in the App Store. When I select these movies, I get a bunch of VLC icons across the bottom of the screen; looks like one for each of the movies. But VLC is not there any more. Would like to know what a recommended alternative is and how to use it. I really have been relying on things working "automatically". Thanks!

Just tried to run those movies and a pop-up said that if I wanted to use VLC (guess it knows that is what they are linked to) I must first install Rosetta. Any idea what Rosetta is all about? Or if I just download VLC as Apple_Robert suggests, will that make the Rosetta thing go away?

Just discovered that when I installed Rosetta to bring back my VLC app, all of the old Intel-based apps that disappeared when I set up the MacBook Pro M1 suddenly reappeared!! Wow!

You don't need Rosetta to run VLC, download VLC for Macs with Apple Silicon chips
