I’m looking for a method to view a list of video files in a folder that shows the video codec.

I’m wanting to change my video collection to H.265 and I’m going to do it piecemeal. So I would like to view a simple list of files with which codec they use so I can see what has already been done. I don’t need any other features, bells and whistles. The apps I’m aware of to check codecs work by loading in the file and viewing them one at a time, which would be terribly cumbersome.

Unless you are desparately short on storage space, I would recommend keeping your video files in their current formats. Converting from one lossy video format to another will result in an increase in artifacts.

I know. But I'm short and can't invest in additional storage right now.

Search the App Store for "codec". Several apps exist for displaying media info. You might be able to use one of them.
