Well crap, it does not work! I was sure it was going to.

If you choose a video on the iPhone and try to transfer it to the iPad with the Photo Transfer app, it says "No photos selected for transfer" on the iPad.

It does work to transfer from the phone to the PC and then from the PC to the iPad. I wonder why it works like that but not the other way?

It works for me just fine.

Wait, so you've tested that Photo Transfer can send a recorded video from an iPhone directly to an iPad? Do you know if it is compressed at all?

Worked for me too, shot a quick video with my iPhone 4, and sent it over using photo transfer app. Doesn't look compressed. Make sure you enable receive video in your photo transfer app settings (in the main ipad settings). It says beta but works pretty good so far.

Does this Photo Transfer app work from device to device or does it require a router in between?

well crap. doesn't help on vacation. was hoping to transfer video from phone to pad.

It's not a perfect solution--the camera connection kit is probably best. But it should work even on a wifi hotspot. I haven't tried it yet, but that's what I was intending to do for an upcoming trip--the damn CCK is still backordered 4-6 weeks, and mine won't be here until late July.

I think you can do this with Goodreader.

I don't have my 4 yet to try a video, but in Goodreader, it's a straight file transfer and doesn't care about the file type, so nothing should be changed.

I have it on my iPad, but had never downloaded in on my phone since I didn't really need it there. Just did and tested a file transfer and it works great on the large PDF I shot across from 3G to iPad.

Need to make sure to browse the website of the source host in the Goodreader browser so you have the save file option.

good luck.

Just tried, no luck.

GoodReader on iPhone 4 will not recognize videos in the Camera Roll.

I uploaded a few videos using dropbox and the quality is shocking. I'm not that bothered about getting them on my iPad. Even some cloud based service would do.
So I could access the vids when I get home from my hols.

I just tested out dropbox with some videos and its terrible.
a 45mb video which looks amazing on my 24 inch imac compresses to 3.5 mb with dropbox and is unwatchable on the mac.
Im going away on saturday and need to find something better, does mobile me allow video uploads???
and whats the quality like??

I bought Photo Transfer and tested it out. It seems to work reasonably well, but the video transfer functionality is certainly beta quality. In four attempts, I managed to transfer one video (which appears uncompressed, but I haven't tested for sure). The others errored out. One of them actually locked up my iPhone.

I'm hoping they improve this soon. It would also be nice if they could engineer something less clunky that doesn't require you to input the phone's IP address and port. I also wouldn't mind some more robust sync functionality between device and computer.

A wee tip about dropbox I just learned. If you take a video from within dropbox rather than choosing one that's already in your camera roll it works far far better.

I'm not really satisfied with the quality of Photo Transfer (another vote for an "app evaluation" system in the app store!).

Here's my favorite solution right now:

PixelPipe just released a version that will upload uncompressed video to several different online services (youtube, etc), including Dropbox. So effectively the free application PixelPipe does what Dropbox's own app can't do, which is upload uncompressed video. I just tested it on a 24-meg video and it worked perfectly. I also validated that it does not compress the video.

I believe PixelPipe has a 200 meg max file size, so it may not be for everyone. It also supports an amazing number of services that you can upload to.

Photo Transfer App - From the developer

Hello everyone,
I'm the developer of Photo Transfer App. I just discovered this thread and wanted to add couple of comments.

As noted here transferring videos from iPhone to iPad is supported in Photo Transfer App as a Beta feature. We currently can only transfer videos shorter than 1 minute as we are having some problems with longer videos. The app seems to run out of memory and crash when trying to read long videos from the camera roll. We are using the new programming interfaces provided by the iOS4 SDK and somehow when we try to get the data for a long video the app just runs out of memory. We are working hard to find a better way to read and buffer the data and hope to have a solution sometime soon. I apologize to those who tried it and had a problem with this feature.

Also, we are working on enabling bonjour service discovery to avoid having users type an IP address all the time. This should work fine for Mac users but we still need to find a good way for Windows users.

I hope this provides some insight on the current status of our app. I will post something here whenever there is an update for the app. Apple is currently an update for our app (1.3) but this update includes only some fixes to minor bugs found on iOS4.

You can send us an email to info [at] phototrasnsferapp [dot] com if you have any further question.

Kind regards.

Cheers for the info. What about an app that can transfer pics or videos or even sync pics or videos between ipads/iPhones and macs ???

This is really great news. I'm looking forward to these changes! Thanks for sharing this information.

I know it isn't technically wireless but the best way to get full-res videos over is by using the USB/Camera Connection Kit.

Yes you have to carry a USB cable and the USB adapter BUT it's better than syncing to a 'puter then back to the iPad...

Dropbox compresses as does everything else you when you try to upload/share the videos from the iPhone.

I couldn't remember if the iPhone 4 was a supported device for the camera connection kit. Great to know that it is. We will be taking our first family vacation to Disney Land at the end of September and wanted to transfers each days worth of video to the iPad (I only have the 16GB iPhone 4). I'm sure our hotel will have wifi, but I'd rather just go the CCK route and know that my video's will not be compressed.

Photo Transfer App 2.0 is out

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know that Photo Transfer App 2.0 is finally out as a free update.

This new version includes the ability to transfer short videos from iPhone to iPad - the videos need to be shorter than 3 minutes. However, we left this as a soft limit that you can change on the app settings. We did a lot of testing and the app seems to handle videos up to 5 minutes in length with no problem. The one thing I would recommend is to have a good wifi connection while transferring the videos and to minimize the use of the network while the transfer is happening so it goes faster and the transfer does not get interrupted.

Another huge improvement is that you don't need to type the address of the other device anymore. The app will find other devices automatically.

I hope you find this update useful. Please let us know if you have any question or comment.

Kind regards,

Enrique
