App updates greyed out?

No sure what's going on, but accessing the app store via my phone, when I select an app that requires updates, rather than getting a tappable blue "update" box, there's the word "free" floating in the grey background as though it's supposed to be in that same button style.

Very strange. Never seen it before. Running nearly up to date firmware (have yet to apply the latest security update)... wondering if this has something to do with automatic download settings.

Still able to update via "update all apps" button... don't like losing finer control, though. Any ideas?
