Keep in mind that most Newspapers and News organizations are starting to hire freelancers instead of having their own higher salary photographers.

In Apple's case or any other company's case, it makes no sense to pay someone to fly to a location and spend a few days taking photos, considering flight , hotel, meals, compensation and local transportation expenses among others.

Also, the right time and angle can't be rushed. It just happens spontaneously, and it's up to the photographer to be able to capture it.

Choosing the best shot among hundreds of possible shots is the wise choice.

i expected that apple hired a photographer to take photos for them. like chase jarvis. they probably do but not for all photos. they just talk to photographers to take photos for them. or use their already taken photos. i guess that's how they do it. i mean you can't use photos if they are not taken yet. so they look at photos photographers have, and if they do not have the one they like they hire photographers to take that photo. if that photo is already available they just take the existing photos. it just shows that apple does not take photos themselves, on their ipads, or iphones like in advertisement ie all taken on iphone. that is just for comercial, advertisement, to make people think they can take photos with their iphones, ipads. but themselves hire photographers, or use existing photos photographers have that they took on their expensive 1dx's canon and nikon d1x's expensive top of the line photo equipment that cost over 6700 euro, and that is just for the camera. there are other things to consider, lenses etc.

I often wonder if Apple employees set up a betting pool on these events for how long it takes the blogs to connect certain dots, find where an image was sourced...etc etc.

In all honesty, do you even code?

Underwater photography is some of the most labor intensive field work out there. Apple has a lot better things to do than get the right poster image for a conference event. At under two Bennies for an image like that, it was a total bargain.

Now find the EXIF data of the image to see where it was taken!

if it has gps in the dslr that is. i do think it does.

MANY Great Photos are Well Planned

Not really. You can have hundreds of professional photographers chasing for that perfect shot and still not get what you want. I think you can not chase the perfect shot, you just have to be totally ready for the right moment when it comes.

Speaking as a past well-published professional photographer, I disagree entirely. For those types of shots, being ready is only useful if you are in the right kind of place. Finding the right kind of place is scouting, and being there is dedication and waiting. All of my published shots were within a planned context, though most were certainly composed, adjusted, and executed on-the-fly.

For a strong argument for planning, see the entire career of Ansel Adams. Also consider how essentially all motion pictures are made.
