Apparently I'm in San Carlos, CA... but I'm not

Just tried using iWant to find the name of an Indian restaurant near my office and I saw lots of addresses on El Camino Real. I've never heard of an El Camino Real in Northern Virginia, but I know that this is a main drag in Silicon Valley.

I switched to Google Maps and clicked on the current location buton in the lower left hand corner and it thinks that I'm on US 101 (or "the 101" as they like to say out West) near San Carlos, CA.

But I'm not. I'm in Northern Virginia. I haven't been to Silicon Valley since at least six months before I got my iPhone 3G.

Also, this location is apparently based only on cell tower information -- I don't have the little blue dot which the GPS provides.

Are you in a spot where you iPhone can get GPS from the satellites? Mine's hit or miss when I'm inside my office when it comes to GPS, although the cell-tower thing it does gets it within a few blocks.

    Working again.

I moved my phone exactly next to the window and eventually got GPS signal.

The phone is now four feet from the window and the cell-based location is showing properly.

My hope is that AT&T was adding a tower in my neighborhood and hadn't configured it properly.

I have a 2G iPhone and, occasionally, I'll get weird results for my location. Once it said that I was in the middle of Long Beach harbor. I think if someone moves their wireless router after the Skyhook people record their location, the iPhone's location can be off.

Hey OP, I've run into the same thing on at least four occasions. Once I was in Roca Baton in Florida, and three other times I'm in Napa, CA, which is a good 45 minutes away from me. :(
