Hi All,

Unfortunately my second Apple 30" Cinema display is having problems.
I bought this display second hand with an Dual Link DVI-Mini display port adapter fairly cheap.
And bought it knowing it had some problems, according to the seller.

I thought/hoped it was the power supply, but maybe it's more than that I think..
I have created a custom 24Volt 10A power supply, and the display runs better of that one it seems.
But still now and then I have some weird problems, where the display is constantly turning on and off it seems.
I made a video recently showing the behavior of this, when it happens.

The problem is solved, when unplugging the power connector from the monitor to the power adapter, en plugging it back in.
Then it can run find for many hours, (have not counted the hours), but at least runs fine for the rest of the day..

I have also experienced another issue, when the backlight was very dimm, and could not get it back up when using the light controls on the side of the monitor.
Again for this problem, when I disconnect the power cable from the power adapter and plugging it back in the problem is solved..

i made a little video, showing this problem in action.

I hope somebody can help me out on this one, thanks in advance,

So basically, assuming the custom power supply is 100% working correctly, another power-related component inside the monitor is to blame. The only thing you could try is another power supply, ruling it out as the cause. I'm not sure what you could do about any internal problems, the display is now between 10 and 15 years old, or as Apple puts it; "obsolete".

Hi,
@sunapple
Thanks for your response !
I can try my other second original power supply, and see if that fixes the problem..

maybe there are some known components on the main logic board of the display, which cause failure ??
Some capacitors or other components which needs/can be replaced.. ?

btw, I thought perhaps I have problems aswell with the power buttons.. ?
I have seen this video :

The symptons are pretty much the same it seems.. ?

I've got the same problem on occasion. So far, if I just rest my finger there for a few minutes it comes back on permanently (well, as long as I don't let the system fall asleep again). But eventually this is going to quit working, so if anyone knows a way to actually fix this, please share.

This issue is cause by the temperature/capacitive sensitive control buttons on the side of the monitor failing. The constant on/off is caused by the display thinking there is a press of the button. There is really no way to fix this unless you replace the part and judging on the fact that the monitor is now close to 16 years old, parts will be hard to find and expensive. I would suggest you take off the plastic side panel and just unplug the board that has the buttons connected to it or attempt to repair it. I just unplugged my buttons and the issue went away. Brightness can be controlled within settings>display anyways in MacOS. Apple service manual on how to remove the side panel is attached (yes i know it is for a 23 inch display but the process to remove the side panel with the button driver board is the same).

A few years ago, this was fixed using magnets on the side panel buttons.

Well I forgot to update this thread.
But My fix was simple I disconnected the side pannel with power button and brightness controls.
Ever since the problem is gone, so I think there was a fault within the button aswell.

I could order a replacement side pannel, with new buttons.
But I leave it disconnected for now..
