The other issue: search in Notes 🤬 I go to look for x note, and I know I’ve referenced said note before, but it says it cannot find the note. Of course, it is when I usually need info from said note immediately.

So now I screen shot the note and tag it in the Photos app, which just bloats my Photos folder. 🤷‍♂️

All the notes are plaintext. At least it included attachments.

Can also get webarchive versions of Notes via Shortcuts. That too includes (some?) attachments.

(I don't use attachments and was able to export one I created with an image file attached)

But, yeah, it's a roll-your-own thing, but at least not taking geologic time to get some data.

Do Time Machine backups on the Mac provide any way to recover Notes?

Maybe. Seen threads where people were trying to recover Notes. ~/Library/Group Containers/groups.com.apple.notes contains the SQLite database, attachments, etc. Not sure how successful those efforts were.

Earlier this month, we reported about some iPhone users temporarily losing all of their notes in the Notes app after accepting Apple's updated iCloud terms and conditions. Apple has now indirectly acknowledged this issue in a new support document that outlines steps to follow if your iCloud notes are not appearing on your iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro.

Fortunately, the notes can be re-synced from iCloud. Apple's steps are pretty much identical to the ones we shared earlier this month:Apple updated its iCloud terms and conditions with some minor changes in September, and it has been notifying users about accepting them in recent weeks. The issue with notes disappearing has continued to affect iPhone users since our initial coverage of it earlier this month, according to social media posts.

Notes disappearing has not been the only problem. In another new support document, Apple said iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro users who receive a "Cannot Complete Action" error message when trying to accept the updated iCloud terms and conditions should update to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS and try again.

And what if your notes app isn't checked off with iCloud like mine?

Do Time Machine backups on the Mac provide any way to recover Notes? I feel pretty decent about my ability to recover from failures with Photos and iCloud Drive, but I wonder about Notes, as the database doesn't seem very accessible...
That's what I want to know. I was expecting that TM would backup this stuff right?

It feels weird to me that a simple restart should fix it. I’ve had other random things disappear since iOS 18: shortcuts from my sharesheet, for example, and subsequently step count and step distance (but the activity ring was still filling up). After 4 or 5 restarts, everything seems to be working normally again. It’s like Windows used to be in the 90s: if you have any problems first try a restart and see if that doesn’t fix it.

You can Export them from the Notes app as PDFs, but it's a manual, labour intensive, one-by-one process and so they can't easily be versionized.
Apple really needs to provide a way to do this automatically with versioning support. But that doesn't sound like something they would be interested in.

Why is Apple so bad at this? For me, there's always at least one weird issue or oddity with their cloud services. Cloud syncing Safari bookmarks, and Find My Email not allowing me to use my iCloud address, or iCloud Drive just never working properly (EVER), for example, and the error messages are no help at all.

There is usually no solution to these kind of weird issues, just the vain hope that the next update will fix it, but it never does.

Can do it via Shortcuts. Basic outline is:

  • Find Notes
  • Repeat with each Note
  • Make PDF from Repeat Item
  • Save PDF to
  • End Repeat
Single Note save attached.

I get it, not for everyone, and Apple does need to do better with Notes, but there are options.

Notes would be frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating as ALL my contacts dissapearing mid year in 2023. Thank heavens I had other methods of backup (Including Google). Was not a fun series of tech support with Apple.

They really need to take delta (or otherwise) backups seriously, and stop having these glitches! Sync shouldn't turn off ever, even if the annoying prompt comes up "Update Apple ID settings" It should STILL autosave to your iCloud accounts (even if read only) based on last credentials. Once credentials are confirmed, it should then prompt the user to validate if sync is correct.

What the heck is the point of Auto Save, if the user has to keep confirming they are logged in, and have it turned on.

I don’t trust icloud for anything except syncing safari bookmarks and messages. It almost always gets the ordering of the bookmarks wrong across devices.

Interesting.

That is one of the most solid aspects of the service in my experience. Updates currently supported OSs well, all the way back to older (out of support) devices I still use on occasion.

Until recently, it was far more reliable than Mozilla, but now they have really upped their game.

Just glad my MacBook doesn’t sync messages to the iCloud and they’re still all present.

Do you mean Messages or Notes?

Because Messages somehow got saved in the cloud before iCloud even had a function for Messages to sync.

You could delete a whole conversation and the contact and if you just enter the phone number in Messages you could scroll back to the very first message years ago on a new empty device.

Only iMessages had to be activated. I am not sure if this also worked on a Mac.

I always wondered where and how this is stored and if this is still the case. It didn't even took space from iCloud and there could be masses of photos and videos in there. You didn't even have to bee logged in to iCloud for this.

If you override filename.pdf you'll end up with a single pdf...from the last exported note.

Messages. Down from 25GB to 800 MB , Apple put me on a diet somehow.

Talking of which 😂 , photos stored in iCloud Photos or Files. If I don’t use Advanced Data Protection, can anyone at Apple view these files and photos ?
Yes, your photos and files on iCloud can be viewed by someone at Apple if you don’t use Advanced Data Protection.

What about my Messages Photos? Most of my iCloud Photos in Messages never sync to my new phone when I upgrade. Drives me insane. Still missing hundreds of them from Messages conversations.
