Is a revision of 3.CAE a normal revision code/thing, because I do have a Seagate drive in my new MacBook? Because I just went through this with a brand new SR MacBook two days ago but got it replaced, and I know that it was this type of Drive and I am assuming that it was the 7.01 faulty part in my old one.

When I got my macbook last year, I had to take it back 3 days later because it was screwed. I can't recall exactly what they said was wrong with it... but it was a long list and all centered around my hard drive. I got a new macbook on the spot.

I don't know what brand was in that c2d macbook... but the replacement I have now has a toshiba, not a seagate

You know what, it's time to get these solid state hard drives into high gear. I am so sick of being dependent on 40 year-old technology to store my life on.

That sucks, iQuit. Backup anything important immediately, and call Apple. Even if they haven't yet worked out a replacement plan, it's best to get yourself on the list right away.

Whew.... I am one of the lucky ones.

How many MB & MBP have Seagate drives out there? Any guesses?

At least :apple: is acknowledging this.

I purchased my first Mac (black MacBook) early this year and the hard drive failed when it was less than five months old. Although they replaced it, it was a huge inconvenience. I've owned over twenty PC's prior and never had a problem like this before, not what I expected for a machine twice as much as a PC.

Well I have owned well over 20 macs and never had a hardware problem. **** happens. Come to think of it I never had a virus either

Model: ST9160823AS
Revision: 3.DAE

My MBP pro has a seagate, but a different revision than all of yours.

Hmm, I've heard of this issue but not nearly as much as the yellow screen problem on the mbp...they ought to acknowledge that as well!

question, does the failure happen all at once or are their symptoms? And if there are symptoms...what are they?:)

Apple should acknowledge the wireless dropouts and missing first letter issues as well(MBP).Apple is honestly a disappointment of late, granted this hard drive issue is Seagate's fault still no comfort for those who have experienced HD failure.

Seagate drives are boat anchors

I bought four 300GB Seagate drives and have a 125% failure rate. All four drives failed in the first year and one of the replacements also failed within a few months.

I now think of Seagate in the same light as Rodime. (Remember them?)

I'm seeing the same thing as you.

But it's ok, I back my stuff up to the external drive on a regular basis...which is also a Seagate. DOH! :)

Just kidding. I've had really good luck/experiences with Seagate products.

Welcome to Jeopardy !

I just want to make sure all the photos on my mom's MB aren't in jeopardy...

Your photos are in danger, regardless of the make/model/rev of the drive in the laptop.

The laptop could be stolen, dropped, drowned with a spilled latte, spiked with static electricity, melted in a hot car, deleted by the wrong command or click, burned in a fire, sucked away by a tornado, flooded in a hurricane, crushed by an earthquake....

Keep a copy on an external hard drive (preferably one that's only plugged in when you make the backups).

It's a good idea to keep a copy somewhere else. Give your mom or dad DVDs of important stuff to keep at the office, or sign up for one of the multi-gigabyte online file services.

If the laptop is a loss, it's just some money to buy a new one and new programs. No amount of money, however, can bring back the photos and videos of the baby's first steps or the wedding or the vacation of a lifetime.

My hard drive went completely dead about a month ago. I bought my MacBook when they came out about a year and a half ago. I did not purchase applecare so it was no longer covered under warranty. So I had to fork over nearly 300 dollars to get both a new hd and a new optical drive. I've pretty much had nothing but problems with this machine (random shutdown syndrome, bad hd and optical drives, etc.) So in a way im glad Apple is acknowledging these hard drive failures; maybe i'll get some of my money back I just payed to have them repair it. Sorry to complain so much but when I bought my Macbook I was a new switcher and I've been given more than enough reasons to switch back but i've stayed loyal.

Just some tips based on what happened to me about knowing if your hd is going bad (not sure if all these were related to the hd but just to note a few of the things I noticed before it complexly died)...computer would just shut off, no low battery warning or anything, sleep light stopped working, and also screen was flickering from time to time. When it came to dieing, I opened my Macbook to awake it and the screen was frozen, reset it and got nothing but a white screen with a blinking folder with a ? mark.

Good luck to everyone who has these hard drives in their Macbooks, make sure to keep things backed up.

Does this also go to Mac Mini HD's?
I just checked right now and I have a seagate with firmware 7.01, im not worried because I have time machine working and all... but arent the harddrives that go in the Mac Mini the same ones that go in the Macbooks? *since they are both 2.5"*

Someone guide me if im wrong...

Fujitsu here.
Feel bad for those that lost their data and i'm disappointed that Apple acts in such a slooow and non professional way to resolve issues like that.

I guess they have a marketing dream team but they should give their quality offices much more attention now days.

Yes! Both me and my roomate have the wireless dropouts and it is quite annoying.

I just checked. I have an affected drive. What should I do? Already backed up. Should I call Apple?

Wow, I just got an email from a friend yesterday saying his computer froze up and now he gets the question mark folder on boot. We were going to run spinright tomorrow, but it's good to know there is a legitimate problem with the series and it's not just a random bad drive.

Here's hoping we can recover some of his user data! He backs up the really important things, so no real worries.

Yeah, well, Apple told me the HD was damaged because of a SMS fail and it there wasnt anything they could do. Working on my second HD thats NOT A SEAGATE drive. Too many problems from the past.

Does anyone know if there are particular simptoms of this kind of failure? Or is it maybe just kind of random... and puff! all the info is gone.

I had the failure occur twice with drives in my Macbook (original and first replacement drive). Both times there were no symptoms leading up to the failure. It was instantaneous - one moment everything was working, the next everything was frozen (because the system couldn't access the drive). Subsequent attempts to reboot or otherwise recover data from the drive failed completely. The only symptom at that point was an audible clicking sound from the drive when it powered up, but by then it was too late to do anything.

As always, keep good backups (easy with Time Machine, right?). Hopefully Apple will initiate a recall for these drives soon.

I had one of those Seagate drives in my past MB. Suddenly one day without warning it went "click" then white screen. Luckily at the time I had a replacement drive so (thankfully) because the MBs have a swappable HDD I just changed it. To this day the Seagate HDD is unrecoverable.

I don't have that MB any more, but if I did I'd be calling Apple because when I spoke to them and Seagate at the time they denied anything could be wrong with it.
