Making podcasts exclusive to a platform feels so antithetical to the idea of podcasts itself. They should rename themselves to Spotify/Apple Radio then. Shame Joe Rogan went this direction.

I think podcasters want monetization, they’re fine with exclusivity and subs are where the money is—especially if you don’t want commercials every 5 minutes as @vicviper789 mentions above. Two podcasts referenced in this thread, Joe Rogan Exp. and Chapo Trap House are examples.

It’s not 2003, podcasts have grown up. Why should they have to be on YouTube or hope for patreon donations to survive?

Rest assured, there are still plenty of podcasters doing it just for the love of it. They don’t have to monetize if they don’t want to 🤷‍♂️

thank you! You’ve summed up everything I needed to know to get up to date on my view of Podcasts.

I remember an app called Swell that Apple bought out a few years back that seemed to do the same thing. If any of it survived, it isn't immediately obvious. Maybe Scout will fare better.

I’m really not a fan of what is happening to podcasts on pretty much every level.

I still don’t see what all the buzz is even from the get go. I’ve always seen this as big FM radio from the internet. Just more of the same.

Being able to listen to content about your hobbies and interests is brilliant. Sure there’s a lot of rubbish and I don’t understand the draw of some of the bigger ones but there’s some real diamonds in the rough depending on your interests.

I hope these features get integrated into Apple's podcast app, sounds great for long drives or mindless, but time-consuming work and chores. I wish I had known about scout.fm sooner.

I think it’s the FM radio content in an on demand form rather than broadcast. A lot of radio shows transfers well to podcast and almost anything that is a podcast could easily go to radio as well. The ability is to have what you want to listen to when you want to listen to it. I used to listen to podcasts during my commute instead of normal radio or music. For me it helps add a little zen to things because it isn’t entirely a waste of time to be stuck in traffic.
