I wonder if Logic Pro follows a similar path.

no - Final Cut was scrapped and rebooted because they had different developers and 'non apple vision' when creating it. this camel acquisition is just a supplement to Logic Pro - which is fully baked apple software already. the two scenarios are entirely dissimilar.

Being a user.

I hope Apple doesn't get rid of it. If they do, I hope they incorporate it into something else. :(

Those of you suggesting that Cubase should incorporate AU in order to continue using Alchemy should know that Logic's native plug ins are not AU. They are built into Logic and cannot be used in other DAWs. Even those that support AU. So I'm guessing Alchemy (or it's derivatives) will be Logic only.

 That sucks. Abolition Live is my DAW and I really like Alchemy.

Photos might be able to compete with Lightroom after a few major updates.

We all remember how limited Final Cut Pro X was at launch... but it eventually got better.

Apple threw out all the old code in FCP7 and started from scratch. Here's to hoping Photos follows a similar path.

While Photos may surprise us somewhere down the line, I think things are a bit different from the FCP X situation here.

iMovie continues to exist alongside FCP X; FCP X is still aimed at the pro market and offered new unique features for pros even at launch, even though it was missing a lot initially.

The other thing is that Apple is officially supporting a migration from Aperture to Lightroom. That clearly sends the message that they are giving up the pro market. There is a remote possibility that they are planning to take back the pro market years from now, and they are offering this option because they know they can't deliver any time soon, but you'd think they'd keep Aperture on life support for a few more years if that really was the case.

Personally I'm excited for Photos even though I like and use Aperture (but I'm a non-Pro who happens to own a DSLR). Seamless workflow across iOS and Mac would be great for me. App Extensions could propel Photos forward with 3rd parties being able to contribute.

I assume Apple is providing a migration path from Aperture to Photos, which will be nice. But that's too easy not to do (whereas no FCP 7 -> FCP X was disappointing but understandable from a technical perspective).

As for Camel Audio, I'm glad they are not disappearing completely. But I expect their plugins will become Logic-only instruments and won't be usable from other DAWs. I wish Logic instruments could be used as plugins in other DAWs, as there is a lot of great stuff in there that can't be used outside of Logic; at least let us use Logic as a Rewire slave (former Logic user here, now using Ableton Live).

Disk Is Too Slow

Has Apple fixed the "Disk Is Too Slow" error even when you have a buttload of RAM, crushing multi-core processing power and the screamingest SSD?

Probably not.

I see a lot of people talking about photo and video software in a thread about music software.

I agree that this is unfortunate for non-Logic users, but as a Logic Pro user I'm excited by this news. Many of Logic Pro's stock instruments could do with a refresh and Camel Audio's plugins are highly rated. Apple is clearly working to separate Logic from the competition and it's nice to see them paying attention to their pro audio products.

I find it hard to believe that Apple has dropped professional photographers after so much focus on professional audio and video.

Photography is arguably the largest market of the three. I think Photos is going to surprise in future iterations.

I genuinely wish I shared your optimism, I really do.

That is one ugly mother of an interface, compared to others like D16 products

Your link doesn't show a picture so I have no idea what your idea of a "pretty" interface looks like. It looks pretty good to my eyes and would fit in with Logic as-is, really. Doing a Google D16 sound search, it would appear it's using real life photos of synthesizers so I don't know see much difference at all, really other than this one is slightly more computer looking and less like a moving photograph (which is beyond skeuomorphism into photography).

All I care about is having more sounds to work with in Logic Pro. It really doesn't have nearly enough USABLE presets and it can take a long time to come up with one's own patches.

As a photographer, Photos believe it or not is just *almost* there. I can see a workflow (different than the traditional one I'm used to) that can be built around photos and be just as capable as Aperture and *more* than Lightroom which is a workflow disaster.

Circling back loosely to the topic at hand, photography is much more important to Apple strategically than audio and video and yet Apple has made large investments in both. Apple is not abandoning photography. Photos 1.0 is already very powerful, it's just very well camouflaged as a simple app with most of its power hidden underneath at the OS level.

Hope they continue CamelSpace. I have tons of old projects that rely on it, and it seems to not work with 32Lives anymore. Was only looking for the 64-bit version last week when I noticed them gone. Also noticed the Apple buyout speculation, which seem to have come true :)

:( I like Camel Audio's products. I hope they don't get discontinued.

Or go Mac-only. There is no way that this purchase by Apple is good news for music amateurs or professionals. Either it gets discontinued and everybody loses out, or it goes Mac only and Windows users lose out.

Acquisitions are generally not good.

To my knowledge, Apple isn't officially (or unofficially) supporting a migration to Lightroom. That was actually a misquote by a third party website that was later retracted way back when Apple first announced Photos. Adobe is officially supporting it of course #.

You can download demo versions of all the D16 plugs and see for yourself.
