Hopstop never really mastered their mapping software as is evident by the NYC transit APP
In Ny case lets see what they can do for Apple
Yeah in a deal like this, it's usually complementary. They solve specific issues Apple face. Apple give them enough resources and support to realize their vision. They are less constrained by the challenges a small company faces.
People were already accustomed to a superior product 'bro', Google Maps. If you replace it then at least give an equivalent product if not better.
In the Map case, Google's business model is too limited. Apple will be hampered by they privacy policies. As the platform holder, Apple may need a more open Map architecture, rather than a monolithic implementation. Apple need a healthy location-based ecosystem vis-a-vis FourSquare, Yelp, Google Map, and many many others in different countries. In some countries, the mapping companies have to be state owned. Google will never be better than them anyway. You have to work through these organizations.
Apparently Tim Cook would agree with me since he bent down on one knee to Google and encouraged users to use competing products.
Yes, you can have the best of both worlds on iOS. :-D
Choose whichever one you like best.
Why should I use a mapping engine that misplaced the location of entire countries and oceans in the year 2012?
It's 2013 now.
You mean something like this in 2013 ?

I believe in one of the Android releases, they also wiped out the month of December. Their calendar year ended in November for a short period. They had to release a patch to fix it. Hey, it's okay too.
Except that Google was already number 1 when they did this.
Remember that time when the Google CEO apologized for his crappy product and recommended his competitor instead?
Oh wait no, that was Apple.
Google was number 1, and if they try to play punk on iOS, they may/will go to number 2 or lower. That's competition.

Yelp is another problem, probably really good in the US, in the UK you might as well read the tea leaves in your cup. Unfortunately Apple Maps will need at least another 5 years to work properly in the UK at this rate. For general directions it works very well, but ask for a cinema and it will send you to a laser eye surgery place (not a joke, but a fact). And the Cinema De Lux Bristol is apparently in Birmingham for some reason.
But that is the point ! With Locationary, Apple can partner with local Yelp variants to jumpstart more effectively.
Different countries have their own "Yelp" sites. China have their own, UK may have your own too.
Apple's approach and business model are different from Google's. They will have different strengths and weaknesses.
