Great so instead of admitting a mistake and putting google maps BACK in they'll let the customers suffer with an inferior map product for years.

Yeah great job.

Shouldn't they have...you know...done this before they released the app? I know I'm not the CEO of a fortune 50 company, so I can't make a call from experience here, but it seems wiser to make your product as complete as possible before you release it, instead of giving it to everyone half assed then rushing to make it good after pissing everyone off.

I know. I know. There's a reason why I'm posting on Macrumors instead of being a billionaire. No one's going "Renzatic wouldn't have let this happen", or claiming I'm rolling in my grave whenever someone does something stupid. But...I dunno...it just seems like a better idea to me.

In all seriousness though, i'm sure Renzatic would have never let this happen.

It makes sense. Apple needs some google employees to help them out. Clearly the Apple maps team needs someone who knows what they're doing.

If you'd like to help... Apple is definitely hiring:

It will take more than hiring Google's leftovers to get the job done. Why even bother instead of adopting the far superior Google maps?

Because that's how progress is made, and how markets stay competitive. By challenging the market leader.

I'm actually a massive fan of the new maps , i believe this is only the start of something bigger then what google can put together. It is taking a risk however i believe if done correctly people will be craving apple maps.

Googles data is so out of date here in Australia , In brisbane (Where i live) the maps and street view are from 2009! The apple maps data is more up to date. In Brisbane are streets have changed so much (Due to new tunels and bridges) that googles maps had become to out of date that you cannot use them correctly.

If one thing apple can learn from google is not to let their data go bad.

Well I'm another one who finds the new iOS 6 Maps to be superior to Google Maps in many ways. Most notably, my house which was built in 2000/2001 still exists as a building site in Google Maps but iOS Maps has a much more recent photo taken in the last year or two. Google Maps also only recently corrected the name of my street despite me complaining about it many times.

Street View is "okay" but to be honest I use it about as often as I am likely to use Flyover in iOS 6. Both a cool for a demo or to kill time but not really all that useful normally.

Navigations are really good in iOS6 Maps and have taken me to where I needed to go several times in recent days. The timing of the voice prompts is particularly good. Google Maps does not even come close for navigation (on iOS 5 at least - android may be better).

What Apple has done in a year is very impressive and is an excellent start given the difficulties in creating a mapping solution from scratch. I am 100% confident that any major and minor issues will be resolved pretty quickly.

I'm not worry... if there's something that Apple is known about, is to work hard in order to offer the best user experience with their products. If something happened less well this time with maps, next time it'll only get better, and better... and I must say, I'm really confident about it! :D

I give Apple credit for trying to get into Maps, but it's really just not ready for public consumption. They really should have just kept Google Maps for another year while they polish up their own Maps offering and THEN release it.

Plain and simple, Apple should have waited before releasing their maps to the public. It isn't finished yet! Now they're scrambling to finish it because obviously people are going to notice its defects. But Apple can get away with doing this because of the crazy demand for the new iPhone.

Am I the only one that hasn't had a problem with Maps so far? I'm guessing yes.

For the most part I like it. I'm in a major United States city for the time being. The interface for turn by turn directions is fantastic and navigating the actual maps is extremely smooth and enjoyable (and functions better over various network connections). That said, the maps definitely aren't up to par with Google Maps. I've found two incorrectly labeled streets, some locations aren't spot-on (not sure if this is any worse than Google Maps, which had pretty regular problems with this as well) and actual searches (e.g. 'restaurants' and 'gas station') return incomplete results (e.g. 'restaurants' omits various established restaurants in various areas and, in one example for 'gas station', only Tesoro stations are returned in the area).

You assume Google was open to Apple renewing. Where's the evidence?

Even if Google was 'open to negotiations' on paper, the terms may have been designed to be unacceptable to Apple.

Let's all move on and, as "superior" as Google's maps are, and they should be with 7 years development, they still suck even in major metro areas.

Are the new Apple maps better than Google maps?, the consensus is NO. But the riff was bound to happen considering the Android competition is growing. This is business people, and this kinda recruiting happens all the time in US at a lower scale. Apple is not a perfect company, Antenagate and the more recent scuffgate have proven that, but in a few years, I can see them having a far more competitive product to Googlemaps. Time will definately tell...

What is crazy is that in a way i agree however to me here in Australia , i find google maps unuseable , apple has release a product that while not 100% , it is something i can actually use.

Unless it's "Apple actively recruiting Streetview", I'll just stick with Google's own maps app when it launches.

Probably because Google was always going to give priority to its android phones and not apple's. When your competition is dependent on you for a service, you don't let them have all the features; people who don't know better criticize your competition and not you.
Also, if like apple, you do a lot of things, do you really want to be dependent on your competition? It's why they're distancing themselves from samsung's chips etc.

What skills? To able to drive a car and operate equipment to steal WiFi passwords and other information?

Don't be an ignorant fanboy. This move supports fact that Google is king when it comes to maps and Apple knows it.

Oh and if you think only Google is guilty of such acts then you're being naive.
