Apple today at WWDC 2019 announced that iPhones and iPads are getting a native swipe-based keyboard named QuickPath.

The new QuickPath keyboard enables allows you to swipe your finger from one letter to the next to type without removing your finger from the keyboard to enter a word, allowing for easier one-handed typing. Apple's website confirms that the keyboard is available in both iOS 13 and iPadOS.

"Simply swipe from one letter to the next without lifting your finger to enter a word," says Apple. "On-device machine learning recognizes the path you draw and converts it for you, making one-handed typing a breeze."

At launch, QuickPath supports English, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese keyboards.

Swipe-based keyboards have been available on the iPhone and iPad since iOS 8 added support for third-party keyboards from the App Store, such as SwiftKey, but this is the first native solution to come from Apple.

So this new keyboard means Apple is definitely getting rid of 3D Touch... :/

Edit: actually I may have spoken too soon. It looks like this is just the Swype keyboard. It doesn’t look like the text selection features that they demoed on the iPad are on the iPhone... they better have a good alternative for iPhones if they really are going to get rid of 3D Touch...

Sadly hard to replicate text selection feature. That one is in particular super handy.

They are mostly replacing those with long press essentially (for example, tapping and holding the space bar already does the same kind of thing even in iOS 12 as 3D Touch does for cursor movement).

That will be the biggest loss in my opinion by getting rid of 3D Touch. They have the trackpad mode if you long press on the space bar, but it doesn’t allow you to select text... Also, Haptic Touch is trash compared to 3D Touch.

That “trackpad” by holding the space bar just allows you to scroll through text, but it doesn’t let you select text like 3D Touch does. Long press won’t work for text selection and having to use two fingers to select text would be terrible on the phone. I don’t see how they will replicate that functionality if they take out 3D Touch. If they had a solution for that, they would have demoed it today... That’s a huge loss to those of us that use 3D Touch heavily on the keyboard...

I agree that it's definitely not a replacement, but seems like more and more 3D Touch type of things are being brought to long press--with iOS 13 it looks like 3D Touching an app icon to get options related to it on the home screen is now available through long press, just as previews of various things like emails or links, which used to be a 3D Touch function will now be a long press feature in iOS 13.

So happy. I’ve been waiting for swipe gestures on the ios keyboard for many years. It’s finally going to bring one-handed fast typing on the iPhone, which will be especially amazing on my SE. And it’s going be awesome on my iPad combined with the resizable keyboard in ipadOS. Just hope it isn’t buggy like all the 3rd party swipe keyboards I’ve used.

I've been using gboard for years. It's so good, i'm so glad it's coming to iOS. the only thing it is lacking is an Emoji search function like gboard has. so glad the tiny keyboard is coming to ipad. Swyping on gboard on a screen that big is pretty awful.

Finally!!! It is unfortunate though that the amount of languages which is supported is soooo limited. No Dutch argh I still have to keep using Gboard which is less good as far as word prediction swiping what Swype used to have but since that was super instable and is no longer supported I had to switch.

The space bar doesn't work with this. Which makes it useless. On swiftkey I can swipe an entire sentence. With quickpath you have to swipe a word then tap the space and then swipe another and then tap. Makes typing a sentence much less useful.

Does it not write out the word and space? that was the one awesome thing about gboard, is not having to use a spacebar all the time. The backspace to delete an entire word was also really good.

I hope they do implement that in the final version because that is essential to have for a swipe keyboard.
