Apple's latest 27-inch iMac comes with an optional nano-texture glass, which is etched at the nanometer level to cut down on reflectivity and glare for a matte look.

The nano-texture glass is available on the 27-inch iMac as a $500 upgrade option, and like Apple's Pro Display XDR with nano-texture screen (a $1,000 option), Apple has very specific cleaning instructions that it wants iMac owners to follow.

A support document updated overnight advises that those who purchase the iMac model with nano-texture glass must use the polishing cloth that Apple provides. No water or liquids should be used to clean the glass either. iMac owners can at most moisten the cloth with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to deal with hard-to-remove smudges.

Apple warns that iMac owners should never use any other cloths to clean the glass, and if the included dry polishing cloth is lost, Apple Support should be contacted so another cloth can be ordered. Apple told MacRumors it charges $9 for replacement cleaning cloths.

Apple also has specific instructions for washing the polishing cloth, which includes using dish soap and water, rinsing thoroughly, and then letting it air dry for at least 24 hours.

The standard iMac glass can be cleaned with a regular microfiber cloth and a small amount of water, while the casing can be cleaned using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

Nano-texture glass was first seen on the Pro XDR Display, which was the butt of multiple jokes because Apple charges $4,999 for the display, and an extra $999 for the stand. The need for a specific Apple-designed cleaning cloth was seen by some as, well, typically Apple.

Apple says its nano-texture finish on the new iMac "maintains contrast while scattering light to reduce glare to the barest minimum." Currently, 27-inch iMac orders with standard glass ship in 1 business day, while the 27-iMac with nano-texture glass ships in 1 to 2 weeks.

For all those who have been longing for matte screens on iMacs, you finally got your wish (at a steep cost). I wonder what’s so special about that Apple cloth. It sounds like just a standard microfiber cloth.

I know how they are, horrible Mr Timmy will have a new $5/month service he will introduce, all the AAPL analysts will be very excited at the potential for huge profits!!

But my CCaaS (cleaning cloths as a service) startup—a dollar shave club for nanotexture displays—just got Sherlocked. 🤬💸

I will be making a complaint to the EU regarding my horrible treatment (and large iMac bezels) by greedy Mr Timmy 😭😡

Would it have killed them to make that screen available on the iMac Pro? The horrible glarly screens are the only thing that puts me off upgrading. Having to go for the XDR Pro Display just to get something that I can use in daylight hours is insane, and as fast as these new iMacs are I can't live without ECC memory.

It's unfortunate that a computer screen that's so expensive, presumably designed to cope with the daily rigours of an office environment, should be so susceptible to damage....

What’s so special about Apple’s cloth? It’s just Apple Lol. I’m sure they have *some* special explanation as to why, but who knows.

With its apparant fragility, I would pay extra not to have it.

If you where a photographer you would buy it, it is a niche upgrade.

Slowly but surely Apple is out of their minds. Honestly. How will you tell that the cleaning company that cleans the offices ... As sad as it makes me, Apple sucks more and more.

The cleaners know not to put windex on the £13,000 lenses, I am sure they'll pick up that the same goes for the computer.

Why so much fragile on this nano coating?

Wacom had etched glass with similar matte effect and yet ultra durable on their Cintiq Pro lineup, I haven't getting it scratched with daily abuse of pen pressure and strokes, and no need specialized cloth to clean it.

And thanks so touchy iOS Big Sur appearance, viewing it on 24 Cintiq make it legit as gigantic iPad since it can perform actual touch operation and pen stylus too.

Apple Cloth… Woven from the hair of the Elephant Shrew with an intricate cross thread from the tails of young Pangolins, aged between three and four months, launched into space and dried under vacuum. Folded with nanometre precision and sealed in the most sterile environment know to man. Designed in California and made in China India. Good for three wipes, and yours for only 499 USD.

Great, I have a solution then. I'll sell you one of these new iMacs without the fragile screen for only $100 more than the machine with the fragile screen. You get your wish and I make an easy $600.

Oh, I know how to fix it - a screen protector film! There you go - protect your monster expensive nano wotsit screen with this $14.99 stick-on, easy clean plastic film. I'll be taking orders as soon as I get the GoFundMe page set up.

I'm just waiting for all the complaints from people who do what most people do - clean the screen with a cloth and glass cleaner. Such a silly thing. It's like that little cloth that comes with your new sunglasses. Odds are, you will lose it and not care.
