Apple has updated their Remote application for the iPhone and iPod Touch to version 1.1 [App Store]. The free application adds remote control capabilities for both iTunes and your Apple TV through your local Wi-Fi network connection. For the Apple TV, it acts primarily as a media browser, allowing you to search, browse and playback both music and video.

Existing features includedl:

- Control the music on iTunes or Apple TV
- See the album artwork on your Remote
- Search your whole iTunes library
- Control your AirTunes speakers

The 1.1 update adds:

- Create Genius playlists
- Create and edit playlists in iTunes

Still getting the "All Apps Are Up To Date" message. This was a "bug" in 2.0.x where App Updates were available in iTunes but could not see them on the iPhone.

^ How do you view lyrics in the iPod App? I've had an iPod Touch forever and never knew you could do that...

If you noticed on the bottom of iTunes, you have the option of playing music on your AppleTV (or Airport express). Unfortunately when you hit play on a video, it doesn't stream to you ATV, instead it plays on the computer.

They need to add control of video playback from my computer to my AppleTV. This would allow me to ditch my IR repeater needed to access my hidden ATV and cut down on remote controls. It would also allow me to access all videos at one time since they do not fit on AppleTV. oh the petty frustration. :(

To see the lyrics you have stored you simply tap the album art once while you are in the 'now playing' screen and under the scrubber bar and genius icon it should show the lyrics.

Although it won't fetch lyrics from the phone, they must already be there

Cool updates.
I don't really have much of a need for the Remote app though.
If it controlled VLC/QuickTime... well that'd be another story.

You have to manually add the lyrics in iTunes. Google the song name and find a site with the lyrics for the song you want, and then copy them into the song info in iTunes. When you play the song on your Touch, tap the middle of the screen and the lyrics show up. It's a really cool feature that a lot of people probably don't know about.

Edit: mfermier beat me to it.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

Just downloaded this. Nice added features to a very nice App.

The Apple Remote app does control an Apple TV. And if the Apple TV is set to sync/stream from an iTunes library, it'll grab media off your Mac and play them on the TV. I use my phone as the remote for my Apple TV all the time. Very handy.

I had the same problem. Just go directly to the app store and get it. It'll then update without a hiccup.

I don't mean to be a party pooper but the Genius function didn't exactly blow me from here to Kuala Lumpur.

What I'm wondering is, why doesn't the Remote app do Front Row?

front row is what I want. Updated but not interested in the genius feature

I just lost the ability to select remote speakers....it used to be an option under each library settings, now it's gone....poor move Apple.

EDIT: oops, it's accessable via the Now Playing Screen instead of the setting screen...my bad.

They haven't removed the feature - simply relocated it! You can get the menu up when you tap on the 'now playing' screen

I was sure that when 1.1 finally came out it would fix the most annoying (to me) shortcoming of the Remote App, since it so obviously shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. When you browse your TV shows, it lists the episodes in alphabetical order, and I don't see a way to override that. AppleTV, iTunes, and the iPod/iPhone all do this the right way -- sorted by season number, then episode number. When you have several seasons of one show, having them sorted by episode name is beyond aggravating.

They did address this slightly in 1.1 by displaying the season and episode numbers underneath the episode name, but this still isn't as good as sorting.

Is there some sort of "sort by" setting somewhere that I'm not seeing?

So this new update just totally messed up the ability to play a song off of a playlist...

Sortof pissing me off.

Anybody else having this problem?

Can you scroll through your list of Apple TV programs and set it to record when you are away from your house?

Is it compatible with TiVo or a DVR? Can I program shows when I am away
from my house? (something that you can already do on the BlackBerry phones)
(there have already been several threads and news articles on the fact that BlackBerry phones can set your TiVo or DVR to record, remotely when you are away from your house. We need an App for this if this iPhone App cannot do this)
