I would be inclined to agree with you but only if Apple had horrible warranty. If you really had an issue with your RAM/Logic board just take it into the store for a technician to check it out.

Oh.... but I suspect Apple thinks this will entice many people to keep upgrading to new Macbooks, vs take the chance. It is unethical in my opinion.

The fusion should absolutely be the standard in iMacs.

I was going to buy the new 21" iMac when they came out, but the customization options really annoyed me.

I'd love to have the HD/GPU upgrade options in the 21 inch that the 27 inch has. If heat is an issue, then maybe they shouldn't have made them so thin...

I just don't like being forced to get the 27 if I want a 3TB fusion drive and the 680.

If they released some sort of Mac Pro Mini-Tower, I'd consider it assuming I had full access to the hardware. Then I'd be here complaining about the price of the Apple Cinema Display and the lack of a smaller size.

$600 does seem quite high. How much does the competition ask for? Just to get an idea for comparison.

Yes, that is by design. There is NO QUESTION that Apple has designed its rMBP and the new iMac in order to require Apple upgrades if you want. Then they price it ridiculous. The problem is that people PAY so as long as they pay, Apple will price accordingly.

Yep. If people stop buying Apple will change behavior.

How does the heat output of a 7200 RPM drive compare to 5400? I would expect it would run hotter and the iMac would be limited by its ability to shed heat.

Ridiculously expensive

A 1TB harddrive goes for $40-50. A 256GB Flash drive goes for about $150. A $100 premium. Yet Apple is charging a $300 premium. But they make their iMacs so you cannot open them up to change anything.

once you go flash you can never go back!
most significant upgrade in recent computing history

You're right. Even just using a 128GB flash drive for OS and apps makes a HUGE difference. I have a PC I built with two 240GB SSD's in Raid 0. Man that thing FLIES!!! I get a full 1GB/sec read/write throughput on it. IT boots up to full blown win7-64 bit in about 5 seconds.

$700 for a $400 part!?!?

Apple SSD Pricing. :D I can't even be angry about this, it's just hilarious.

This is for Dubai oil princes who don't know what to do with their money.

My feeling too, it's good to see their pricing department hasn't lost their sense of humour!

(the $700 is including the value of the 1tb drive you'd otherwise be getting).

fusion drive

I put a Fusion Drive in my 2008 unibody Macbook and its amazing, it runs better than new. 750GB with only 8GB of flash for the os and your most used programs, but its a fantastic drive.

Yea same here, only have 128gb M4 with OS/Programs + Games and it flies. I have a regular hdd for the extra stuff I don't care about speedwise. Totally worth the $100-120 upgrade.

Here's where your entire post is flawed. Until competitors come out with an AIO that's even remotely close to the iMac to drive competition then you insisting that the iMac be standardized with a Fusion drive makes no sense. Most consumers are not even trippin' about a "Fusion Drive" let alone even know what it is and those are generally the consumers that make up for most of Apple's sales.

You're not being forced into anything. As a consumer you have a choice, as Apple being a retailer they can design their business practices any way they so please. It's up to you to take it or go to another competitor. It's that simple.

hope they off the fusion drive options for the next MBP's

Can't believe the standard drive is 5400RPM. What a joke.

Johnny wanted to slice cheese with his computer, so the 7200RPM would probably make too much heat for it to dissipate. Totally agree that it was stupid to put in a 5400, but IMHO it was premature to yank the disk drive for a lot of people.

Totally Agree, this is what killed my iMac's performance. I had to break down and install an SSD drive voiding my Apple care, but my 2 year old iMac was just too slow.

NewEgg price for a 1TB Hybrid drive = $120.
Average NewEgg price for a 256 SSD = $200. Apple tax = $220.
Average NewEgg price for a 512 SSD = $450. Apple tax = $270.

Apple essentially charging massively higher than retail and I've lost count on the number of people who have commented that they would buy it. I need to meet these people because I have a few things I'd like to sell them myself. :D
