I'm doing fairly well with the base, free, storage amount Apple gives and since I am an Office 365 subscriber I also have 1TB of storage space that I use with OneDrive and of which I'm only using about 10% of it.

Have you had any issues with OneDrive. I've debated upgrading my Dropbox to the Pro account, but I have a hard time justifying with my Office subscription.

I have to use Dropbox for a few apps so I can't get rid of it, but I'm thinking of using my 10GB of Dropbox for in-use files and apps, OneDrive for selective sync backups of some movies, Music, photos etc. (to supplement my local plan), and iCloud Drive for just some app folders.

I can't see paying for Dropbox Pro for selective sync backups when I can use Onedrive for it.

I have not. In fact OneDrive has become my primary storage provider over Dropbox. I still use Dropbox, but not nearly as much as before. I use OneDrive on my PC's, Mac's and iOS devices and I've not had any trouble with it or any complaints.

What's kind of annoying is that I could move everything over to OneDrive except for Scrivener. Scrivener is the only application that requires Dropbox sync. No iCloud or OneDrive.

Yeah, I have a few apps that are like that too and its why I keep DropBox. Not that I need to get rid of it or anything either.

Slightly off topic, but the one big shortcoming of iCloud Drive and OneDrive fro me is that they don't support symlinks. Dropbox does. I like being able to keep all my documents in Documents and pictures in Pictures instead of spreading them across system folders and a sync folder.

Have you tried it? I don't see why it would not work. In theory the sync app would not even know it was a symlink.

There is an app called MacDropAny that just makes the symlinks for you for those not comfortable in Terminal, and the dev. lists iCloud Drive and OneDrive as working.

I can't find the post now, but when iCloud Drive first came out I helped a forum member make a symlink to ~/Documents and as I recall it worked.

I'll look into that. Have you used it? I don't mind using the terminal, but I read that the terminal method doesn't work with OneDrive and the iCloud Drive folder isn't like Dropbox, it's hidden in the library - making the terminal method more difficult.

I have used the app and it works.

I just did a iCloud Drive test by making a new folder, putting a few files in, then using the app to make the symlink and it worked perfectly.

What makes iCloud Drive a little tricky in Terminal is the folder is actually at this location and not "iCloud Drive" like it appears to be.

Code:
~/Library/Mobile Documents

If you navigate to this folder then open it, it takes you to iCloud Drive.

Oh, I see. Thanks. I may try that with the terminal too.

You will need to stick that escape character in there because of the space if you go the Terminal route. (If you already know this, I don't mean to be insulting and ignore me. :))

Code:
~/Library/Mobile\ Documents

Thanks, you're awesome.

I did know that already, but extra info is never insulting! :)

Pros and Cons of storing lots of stuff in iCloud and paying repeatedly, versus having your own NAS? Can anyone help with inputs? I am contemplating building up my own NAS for consolidating my external drives, and since it will be a NAS, I could use it as replacement to "file storage" in iCloud, right?

My work documents are still far from the 5GB limit, so Pages suffices. Most of it is in OneDrive and used by MS Word apps anyway. So..

Any and all feedback appreciated!

And a 1TB option ;)

Seriously. I know I can get the 4TB. But I honestly don’t want to sign up for the entire apple One package just to get the other 2TB. Nothing else of apples service interests me.
